They’re no taller than a golden retriever, but these pint-sized therapy animals are making a giant leap in the hearts of seniors.
From bustling community centers to quiet nursing homes, these gentle visitors trot in with more than just charm—they bring comfort, connection, and a spark of joy that lingers long after they have left the room.
Whether it’s easing loneliness, rekindling memories, or simply offering a soft muzzle to stroke, these miniature companions are redefining what healing looks like in urban elder care. And trust us, once you see the smiles they inspire, you’ll believe in the magic, too.
Small, surprising, and changing senior lives
There’s something undeniably special about the connection between people and animals, especially when those animals arrive with tiny hooves and outsized charm.
In a moment that felt lifted from a storybook, two miniature horses made a surprise visit to Sunrise at East 56th, a senior living community on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Their arrival wasn’t just adorable—it was transformative.
The visit was organized by HorseAbility, a Long Island nonprofit that specializes in equine-assisted therapy for individuals of all ages and abilities.

On a crisp October morning, residents gathered with anticipation as Pearl, a gentle 17-year-old, and Aiden, a lively 15-year-old, stepped out of their cozy van and into the hearts of everyone they met.
As the horses made their way through the facility, the mood shifted. Smiles widened, laughter bubbled up, and for a few hours, everyday worries faded into the background. Residents reached out to stroke soft muzzles, share quiet moments, and snap joyful selfies.
One resident, Joann Girsh, summed up the experience with heartfelt clarity: “It just makes me feel so calm. It makes me feel better,” she said. “I was just touched by this animal, and I want to cry because it gives me hope that there are good things in this world. I truly love this animal.”
For many residents, the visit stirred cherished memories—childhood rides, family farms, or long-lost pets. For others, it was a brand-new experience filled with wonder.
Another resident was moved to tears, overwhelmed by the comfort and joy these gentle creatures brought.
Dani Green, executive director of the Sunrise at East 56th, reflected on the impact: “It’s amazing. It reduces anxiety, stress. We’re not just here to do Juilliard concerts every day. Pony therapy is a step above puppy therapy.” Her words highlight the growing recognition of animal-assisted therapy as a meaningful complement to traditional care.

HorseAbility’s miniature horse visitation program is designed to support emotional, physical, and social well-being. These small horses are chosen for their calm nature, intelligence, and eagerness to engage. Their presence encourages connection, storytelling, and healing, especially among seniors who may be navigating isolation or cognitive decline.

And science backs it up. Studies show that spending time with animals can lower blood pressure, reduce stress hormones, and even enhance immune function. For older adults, regular visits from therapy animals can foster social interaction, ease depression, and restore a sense of purpose.
Beyond these visits, HorseAbility offers a wide range of equine-assisted services—from riding and carriage driving to hands-on activities like grooming and leading. Each program is tailored to the individual, ensuring that every participant—whether a child with special needs or a senior rediscovering joy—can experience the unique benefits of working with horses.
