When aspartame was released by the FDA, back in 1974, no one knew (as far as the general public is concerned) that one of the metabolic byproducts of this was methanol - the same alcohol as in antifreeze! Methanol is known to be toxic to the liver, particularly in those with multiple sclerosis...
