This everyday bathroom item was just recalled and health officials are issuing an urgent warning

We often trust what’s in our shower without a second thought—but a recent recall is raising concerns about what could be lurking in your shampoo bottle. If you’ve visited a salon lately, you might want to take a closer look.

The Recall: A Dangerous Bacteria Found in Shampoo Bottles
Germany-based manufacturer Henkel has issued a recall for 1,068 bottles of Tec Italy Shampoo for dry and damaged hair after discovering contamination with Klebsiella oxytoca, a bacterium that can become life-threatening if it enters the body in the wrong way.

This shampoo—while often seen at stores like Walmart or Amazon—was distributed directly to salons, where it could have been unknowingly purchased or used on customers.

What Is Klebsiella Oxytoca—and Why It’s a Big Deal
Klebsiella oxytoca is normally harmless when it stays in the digestive system.

But once it enters the bloodstream or urinary tract, it can cause severe infections, particularly in those with weakened immune systems or chronic conditions.

In rare cases, the bacteria can lead to sepsis, pneumonia, or kidney infections—and experts estimate the mortality rate ranges from 10% to 20%.

No illnesses have been reported yet, but the recall is a precautionary move to prevent potential harm.

How to Spot the Recalled Product
If you use Tec Italy Shampoo or have had it used at a salon, here’s how to identify the affected batch:
  • Expiration date: May 27, 2027
  • Lot code: 1G27542266
Not the First Time
This marks the second Tec Italy shampoo recall this year. Back in January, the company recalled its Tonico Shampoo over possible E. coli contamination.

While these recalls may feel rare, they highlight the importance of routine safety checks—even in everyday products like shampoo.

What Are the Symptoms of Infection?
Infections from Klebsiella oxytoca can resemble other illnesses, which makes diagnosis tricky. Possible symptoms include:
  • Fever, chills, or flu-like discomfort
  • Cough or shortness of breath
  • Painful urination or abdominal cramps
  • Nausea or vomiting
Most healthy people will recover fully with rest or antibiotics, but those at higher risk should seek immediate medical care if symptoms appear after using the recalled shampoo.
Key Takeaways

  • Over 1,000 bottles of Tec Italy Shampoo for dry and damaged hair have been urgently recalled due to contamination with Klebsiella oxytoca bacteria.
  • The recalled shampoo was sold directly to salons, and although the bacteria is typically harmless in the intestinal tract, it can be deadly if it enters the bloodstream.
  • No illnesses from the shampoo have been reported so far, and the affected products can be identified by their expiration date and lot code.
  • This recall follows a previous one for Tec Italy's Tonico Shampoo which was potentially contaminated with E. coli bacteria; as with the latest incident, the potential health consequences are most serious for those with weakened immune systems or chronic health conditions.
