Attention Walmart shoppers! Find out if your state is on this vegetable warning list

If you’ve recently visited your local Walmart, you might want to take a closer look in your fridge.

A major food recall has been issued for a popular product found in the produce aisle, due to a potential listeria contamination.

This news is especially important for our GrayVine readers, as many in the senior community are more vulnerable to foodborne illnesses.

While food recalls happen regularly, they always raise concerns, especially when they involve potential health risks.

This year alone, we’ve seen numerous recalls due to foodborne illnesses, undeclared allergens, and bacterial contamination.

It’s critical for those of us with food sensitivities, allergies, or weakened immune systems to stay informed.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) identifies nine major food allergens.

Listeria can affect anyone, but it’s particularly dangerous for older adults, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems.

What you need to know about the affected celery

Duda Farm Fresh Foods, Inc. has issued a precautionary advisory for Marketside Celery Sticks sold in select Walmart stores due to potential listeria contamination.

The celery sticks in question have surpassed their best by date of March 23, 2025.

Although they may no longer be on shelves, they could still be in your home, possibly in the freezer.

Freezing doesn’t eliminate listeria, so even frozen celery could still pose a risk.

The affected product is packaged in 4-count, 4-inch/1.6-ounce bundles with the UPC number 681131161510 and lot code number P047650.

As of now, no illnesses have been reported, but the FDA has noted that 1,587 cases of the celery were affected.

This recall only impacts the Marketside Celery Sticks, not other products from Duda Farm Fresh Foods, Inc.

The risk of listeria

Listeria is not a bacteria to be taken lightly.

It can cause severe, sometimes fatal infections, and is especially dangerous for individuals over 60.

Symptoms of listeriosis often start with fever, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal issues like diarrhea.

If the infection progresses, it can lead to more serious symptoms like a stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and even convulsions.

The FDA’s warning and next steps

The FDA issued the alert after random sampling by the Georgia Department of Agriculture found listeria on the celery.

Listeria monocytogenes is particularly stubborn and can even grow in refrigerated environments, making it a persistent threat to our health.

If you have the affected celery at home, the FDA urges you to discard it immediately.
