When Young purchased the Broken Arrow Ranch in California, the caretaker—an older man who took care of the property—remarked, “How can you be so young and own this place?” That simple question became the spark for the heartfelt lyrics we all know today.

And here’s another fun tidbit: The hauntingly beautiful high harmonies you hear in the song? Those are sung by none other than James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt. Talk about an all-star lineup!
