Four brothers left home for college and eventually prospered, each becoming successful in his own field. Some years later, they met after having dinner together and chatted about the gifts they had sent their elderly mother, who lived far away in another city.

Milton, the first, said, “I had a big house built for Mama.”

Marvin, the second, said, “I had a $100,000 theater built in the house.”

Michael, the third, said, “I gave Mama a brand-new Mercedes.”

Melvin, the fourth, said, “You know how Mama loved reading? She can’t read much anymore because her eyesight’s not what it used to be. I found a parrot trained to recite any book—it took 20 years to teach it and cost me a fortune! Mama just has to name the chapter and verse, and the parrot recites it.”

Later, their Mama sent them thank-you notes. She wrote:

“Milton, the house you built is so huge I live in only one room, but I have to clean the whole thing. Thanks anyway.”

“Marvin, you gave me an expensive theater with great sound—it could hold 50 people—but all of my friends are far away. Appreciate the thought.”

“Michael, I don’t drive anymore, but thank you just the same.”

“Dearest Melvin, you were the only son with the good sense to put some thought into your gift. The chicken was delicious. Thank you.”
