Front Porch Forum: “A Chipped Baker” (06/13/2025)

Greetings, GrayViners! We’ve received another letter from someone facing a pickle. Got some advice to offer? Here’s their story:

Dear TGV,

I could use a bit of advice from others who know their way around a well-used kitchen.
Baking has always been a favorite pastime of mine, and I’ve collected a handful of trusty tools over the years. One of my favorites is a casserole dish I received as a wedding gift from my mother-in-law—nothing fancy, but it’s seen me through plenty of family dinners and potlucks.

Recently, a close friend asked to borrow it for a special meal with her grandkids. I was happy to help, and just asked her to bring it back clean and in good shape.

She returned it about a week later, but when I unpacked it, I noticed a big chip on the rim and some stubborn stains. When I mentioned it, she just shrugged and said, “These things happen—just cover it with foil next time.” I suggested maybe she could help cover the cost of a replacement or repair, since it was damaged while she had it. Now she’s barely talking to me and says I’m making too much of it.

I value our friendship, but I can’t help feeling disappointed. Am I being unreasonable for asking her to make it right? Has anyone else dealt with something like this? How did you handle it?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts,
A Chipped Baker

For myself, a treasure like that would never have been loaned out, friend or not. She may not even be able to find one close to that. Yes, she should replace it. But keep the dish as a memory. I would question my friendship. Might have to make a change. How devastating to have that damaged and her so what attitude shows nothing means much to her.
