Front Porch Forum: “A Chipped Baker” (06/13/2025)
Greetings, GrayViners! We’ve received another letter from someone facing a pickle. Got some advice to offer? Here’s their story:
Dear TGV,
I could use a bit of advice from others who know their way around a well-used kitchen.
Baking has always been a favorite pastime of mine, and I’ve collected a handful of trusty tools over the years. One of my favorites is a casserole dish I received as a wedding gift from my mother-in-law—nothing fancy, but it’s seen me through plenty of family dinners and potlucks.
Recently, a close friend asked to borrow it for a special meal with her grandkids. I was happy to help, and just asked her to bring it back clean and in good shape.
She returned it about a week later, but when I unpacked it, I noticed a big chip on the rim and some stubborn stains. When I mentioned it, she just shrugged and said, “These things happen—just cover it with foil next time.” I suggested maybe she could help cover the cost of a replacement or repair, since it was damaged while she had it. Now she’s barely talking to me and says I’m making too much of it.
I value our friendship, but I can’t help feeling disappointed. Am I being unreasonable for asking her to make it right? Has anyone else dealt with something like this? How did you handle it?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts,
A Chipped Baker
