The $120 Walmart surcharge shocking shoppers at checkout

Online shopping is supposed to save time and money, but some Walmart customers are finding themselves with unexpected—and costly—surprises at checkout.

Imagine ordering five everyday essentials totaling under $40, only to see your final bill climb past $150.

That’s exactly what happened to a shopper in the US Virgin Islands, who was stunned by a $120 “location surcharge.”

Their experience has drawn attention online, with other customers in places like Hawaii and Alaska reporting similar issues.

For shoppers on fixed budgets, these sudden charges raise serious questions about fairness and transparency in online retail.

The mysterious “location surcharge”

The shopper’s receipt showed five items priced at $37.72.

Then came the surprise: a separate line item adding $120.49 to the total.

Others in the Virgin Islands, Hawaii, and Alaska have also reported these steep surcharges.

One Walmart Plus member even asked on social media why they were being charged extra despite all items shipping directly from Walmart, not third-party sellers.

Why are these surcharges happening?

Walmart’s shipping policy explains that items shipped to Hawaii, Alaska, US territories, and other overseas locations may carry additional fees.

These costs are applied automatically during checkout and appear as a separate charge.

Heavy or oversized items can increase the total even further.

While the rules are disclosed online, many shoppers say they didn’t expect the fees to be so high—or applied so broadly.

Why now, and why so high?

Longtime Walmart customers suggest the surcharges have become more frequent in recent years.

Rising shipping expenses, supply chain challenges, and higher delivery costs to remote areas may all play a role.

Whatever the reason, many customers describe the amounts as unreasonable.

Some have said they now avoid Walmart altogether and choose competitors like Amazon for online orders.

How to avoid surprise fees

If you’re concerned about unexpected charges, there are steps you can take:

  1. Double-check the checkout screen – Always review the final payment breakdown before placing your order.
  2. Compare retailers – Shipping costs vary; Amazon, Target, or local stores may offer lower or no surcharges.
  3. Explore local options – Regional stores may have online ordering without extra fees.
  4. Read Walmart+ fine print – Membership perks don’t always cover surcharges in non-continental US areas.
  5. Call customer service – Occasionally, charges may be applied in error and can be corrected.

The bigger picture

With shipping costs climbing everywhere, retailers are passing more of those expenses onto customers.

For those living in mainland states, the issue may be less common, but for people in US territories, it has become a frequent and frustrating part of online shopping.

For families already managing tight budgets, these surcharges can make Walmart’s convenience far less appealing.

I had this happen to me and I live in PA. I ordered something I often buy for pickup and when I went to order it said it was out of stock. I looked for a substitute and when I found the same item that was available except it needed to be shipped. Since I did not need it immediately I thought this would be a good alternative. Often when I am ordering I am in a hurry to get done and just go through the steps. Luckily this was not what happened this day and when I went to the screen to put the order through I noticed the total had increased. I went back and looked at the item's posting. I could not find anything to explain the charge. I called the help line for Walmart and spoke to a wonderful employee. He looked through everything and could not explain the increase to me. He asked me to five him a minute to find out what happened. He came back to tell me that it was a shipping surcharge. He said he had to call several others to find the answer. He apologized and agreed with me that the surcharge was too high and I was right to question it and not choose to purchase the item. I am on a budget and that would have messed me up for a month or so. As the article says be careful and do not be afraid to ask when you see a charge you do not agree or recognize. I have learned to check everything before clicking to place the order.

We had the same thing ALMOST happen to us.
My wife wanted a couple more resin patio chairs and saw that they were on sale for $20.00. She put them on her normal list and when she went to pay the total was $100.00 more than what it was supposed to be.
She took the chairs off of her order and the total came down to what it should have been.
Instead of shipping the chairs, which were out of stock at the local store, she opted to drive less than 10 miles to the next nearest store and picked them up.
I don't mind paying shipping costs but not for something that I can pickup for free.
