Can You Remember The Smell?

Before the time of sleek plastic pens and dry-erase boards, these chunky tubes of color ruled the classroom and the office alike. You could spot one by its bold blue label — and recognize that unforgettable marker smell the instant someone started writing. They squeaked across poster boards and left ink stains on more than a few fingers. Do you remember what they were called?

They’re Carter’s Marks-A-Lot markers, the classic felt-tip pens that filled classrooms and offices with that distinct inky aroma. Before scented markers and erasable pens, these sturdy blue tubes made bold lines, colorful posters, and plenty of memories. Did you keep a set in your desk or use them at school?

My dad had a set of them in his desk at home. We were never to touch them. I liken this way of NOT SHARING to using mom’s fabric scissors. NEVER! There was a pair of kitchen shears obviously kept in a specific drawer In the kitchen. Those were for the whole family. If you were lucky enough to use them you better bring them right back or using them in the future is not a given.
I remember the smell as if it was yesterday. We didn’t have our own until we were married. We used them at work and in our home. We used them to address packages to ship and whatever else we needed to do. We liked the ones that WERE NOT using permanent ink! 😵‍💫
