90% off deals and store closures? Here’s why this retail store is making major moves
- Replies 0
The retail landscape is ever-changing, and as we move further into the digital age, brick-and-mortar stores face new challenges.
A familiar name in the American shopping scene has announced the closure of 27 stores across the country.
For our GrayVine community, this news brings a mix of nostalgia for the shopping experiences of yesteryear and the anticipation of snagging some incredible deals.
Retailers nationwide are struggling to keep up with shifting consumer habits, increased competition from online shopping, and the ongoing economic landscape.
Former Kohl’s CEO Tom Kingsbury acknowledged the difficulty of these decisions, stating, "As we continue to build on our long-term growth strategy, it is important that we also take difficult but necessary actions to support the health and future of our business for our customers and our teams."

Kohl’s isn’t alone in making these changes. Experts predict that up to 15,000 stores across the country could shut down by the end of 2025—double the 7,000 closures in 2024.
Despite concerns about a retail apocalypse, Neil Saunders of Global Data pushes back on this notion, stating, "While it is true that we're seeing a rash of store closures, this is mostly because weaker players are dropping out of the market—because they have failed to convince consumers to shop with them."
With Kohl’s winding down operations at these locations, shoppers are already taking advantage of deep discounts.
Clearance sales began weeks ago, with markdowns starting at 50% off, increasing to 70%, and now reaching as high as 90% off as stores rush to clear out inventory.
One shopper shared on Reddit, "We have had a big sale for two months starting at 50 percent, then 70 percent. We are down to just five racks left out of the whole and they are at 90 percent off."
Customers hoping to grab bargains should act fast—many of these stores may close earlier than expected due to dwindling stock.
Kohl’s is shutting down stores across 15 states, with California losing the most locations. Here’s the full list of stores scheduled to close:
Kohl’s is undergoing major leadership changes, with Ashley Buchanan stepping in as CEO after Tom Kingsbury officially stepped down on January 15.
Buchanan, who has a background with Walmart, Sam’s Club, and most recently Michaels, is expected to lead the company into its next phase. Kingsbury will continue in an advisory role.
