A familiar favorite is making a big return—and it comes with something free

Some food comebacks are quiet. Others arrive in a crispy red-and-white bucket.

As the heat turns up in the fast-food world, one major name is stepping back into the spotlight.

And for longtime fans, the return isn’t just nostalgic—it comes with a free taste of something unmistakably original.

KFC has launched what it’s calling the Kentucky Fried Comeback. The bold campaign is aimed at putting the Colonel “back on top” as the nation’s No. 1 chicken chain.

According to KFC, this comeback follows behind-the-scenes efforts to improve its taste and operations.

The result? A hotter, crispier product that brings the flavor closer to what longtime customers remember.

“Crispy, hot, and unmistakably original,” the company said in a recent press release.

It’s a renewed focus on the Colonel’s legendary recipe of 11 herbs and spices that helped define American fast food.

Catherine Tan-Gillespi, President of KFC US, emphasized the message clearly.

“If people can give their ex a million second chances, I hope our fans can give us one... Come back and give us a shot—your first bucket’s on us.”

Here’s how to claim your free bucket

KFC is offering free buckets of chicken as part of the campaign—but only under specific conditions.

The deal, called “Free Bucket On Us,” is available online and requires a minimum order.

To qualify, customers must:
  1. Spend at least $15 (before taxes and fees) on a single order.
  2. Order through KFC.com or the KFC app using a KFC Rewards account.
  3. Redeem the “Free Bucket On Us” offer before checkout—it does not apply automatically.
Only select stores are participating, and the deal cannot be combined with other promotions. Customers are still responsible for applicable taxes and service fees.

The promotion runs through August 24, according to KFC spokesperson Maria Schmitz.

After receiving the free bucket, customers will be asked to fill out a feedback form through KFC’s website.

The company says this comeback campaign is more than just a freebie—it’s a chance to reintroduce itself.

With growing competition in the so-called “chicken wars,” KFC is hoping the familiar taste will remind America who came first.

And they’re not the only ones making moves. McDonald’s recently reintroduced its Snack Wrap, adding even more heat to the fast-food chicken competition.

KFC is betting that improved flavor and customer satisfaction scores will drive fans back through its digital doors.

Its renewed chicken, it says, is meant to taste like it did in the beginning—“crispy, hot, and unmistakably original.”

Big changes are also happening behind the scenes

KFC is preparing for a major shift that extends beyond its menu.

In February, Yum! Brands—KFC’s owner—announced the company is moving out of Kentucky.

Currently based in Louisville, KFC will establish two new headquarters: one in Plano, Texas, and another in Irvine, California.

The move is part of a broader plan to remain innovative and competitive across US markets.

Roughly 100 corporate employees will relocate to Texas this year. An additional 90 remote workers are expected to move there by early 2027.

The company insists it’s necessary to stay ahead in today’s fast-moving fast-food market.

Don’t miss your shot at a free bucket. With the Kentucky Fried Comeback underway, KFC is inviting both loyal fans and curious newcomers to take a second bite.

And the timing couldn’t be better—with so many options on the market, a familiar flavor might just stand out.

Whether you’re craving a nostalgic meal or just want to save a few dollars, this offer could be worth jumping on.

But don’t forget to follow the steps exactly—especially selecting the deal before checkout.
