A grocery favorite dubbed better than Whole Foods is set to open its debut store in the state

Sometimes, a new business quietly sets up shop and ends up transforming the entire rhythm of a neighborhood in ways that few could have predicted at first glance.

This particular one comes backed by a nationwide reputation and a fanbase so devoted, it’s been known to line up for hours just for a taste of what’s inside.

Whether the buzz has reached your ears yet or not, something significant is making its way to Connecticut, and it has the potential to shift how people across the state experience their weekly grocery trips.

And once July arrives, all the talk and speculation will give way to something you can walk into, explore, and maybe even become obsessed with yourself.

Wegmans, the high-end grocery chain often compared favorably to Whole Foods, is officially opening its first Connecticut store in Norwalk on July 23.

The much-anticipated launch features a massive 92,000-square-foot layout that includes two levels of shopping space.

Unique to this location is a solar-paneled parking deck and pedestrian bridge leading directly into the store’s upper floor, aiming to make chaotic parking lots a thing of the past.

The opening marks a major milestone for Wegmans, whose fans have been calling for a Connecticut location for years.

At the heart of the Norwalk store will be the Market Cafe, a signature Wegmans feature known for elevating the typical grocery store experience.

“The Market Cafe will be the first thing shoppers will encounter when they enter the store,” a Wegmans spokesperson said, confirming that a sushi counter—exclusive to this location—will be part of the offering.

The prepared food section rivals that of top-tier local eateries, serving wood-fired pizzas, fresh salads, and hot entrees from around the globe.

For those seeking convenience without sacrificing quality, this corner of the store may become an everyday destination.

Wegmans is also giving serious attention to its beer and beverage offerings. “The Norwalk beer department will offer one-stop shopping with an unmatched selection of the best quality and value,” said Wegmans spokesperson Marcie Rivera.

Shoppers can expect more than 500 varieties of domestic, craft, and imported beers, plus hard ciders and an expanding lineup of non-alcoholic wines and spirits.

Staff will be on hand to guide customers through tastings and pairing suggestions for any occasion. The rest of the store reflects Wegmans' well-known attention to detail and commitment to quality.

Traditional departments like the butcher, deli, and seafood counter will be staffed by specialists offering premium selections. Cheese enthusiasts will find a dedicated area stocked with products aged in the company’s own cheese caves in Rochester, New York.

Throughout the aisles, a blend of Wegmans-branded goods and name-brand favorites will be available for one-stop convenience.

This new Connecticut location is part of a larger expansion push that shows no signs of slowing down. In 2024 alone, Wegmans opened stores in Lake Grove, New York, and Rockville, Maryland, with additional locations already confirmed for 2026 and beyond.

“We’ve received thousands of requests for a Wegmans in the Pittsburgh region since opening our first Pennsylvania store over 30 years ago,” said Dan Aken, the company’s VP of real estate and store planning.

He added, “We’re excited to have finally found the right location to bring Wegmans to the Pittsburgh area.”
