A magical new neighborhood concept is coming... and not everyone wants to move in

When you think of a certain iconic entertainment brand, you probably picture castles, theme parks, and childhood magic—not a housing development in North Carolina.

But a new real estate project from the company is flipping that idea on its head.

As part of a larger lifestyle initiative, the planned community has stirred both excitement and skepticism online.

Is this the future of neighborhood living—or a leap too far into branded fantasy?

What is Asteria?

Asteria will be Disney’s newest master-planned community, located in Pittsboro’s Chatham Park close to Raleigh, North Carolina.

Developed in partnership with DMB Development, the project will include around 4,000 homes, ranging from single-family houses to multi-tenant buildings.

Disney Imagineers—known for designing theme parks—are also contributing, crafting a special clubhouse and other community spaces.

Residents will have access to curated wellness programs, exclusive events, and special excursions, though Disney hasn’t revealed exactly what those will entail.

Sales are expected to begin in 2027.

Who’s it for?

Disney says Asteria is intended for all ages: from young families to adults over 55 looking for a socially active, amenity-rich lifestyle.

The goal is to create a community that feels vibrant and connected, with just enough pixie dust to keep things interesting.

But the idea of living in a Disney-branded neighborhood isn’t appealing to everyone.

When Asteria was announced, social media lit up, with reactions ranging from enthusiastic support to strong local opposition.

Supporters are eager for a neighborhood infused with Disney charm.

Critics, especially those in the Pittsboro area, voiced concerns: “No one who lives out here already wants this. We’re all pretty frustrated. I foresee many problems in the future.”

Others took a humorous angle: “Can you imagine the HOA in this place? Goofy, Minnie, and Donald Duck telling you what you can have in your yard.”

How much will it cost?

Disney hasn’t released pricing details yet. But if the first Storyliving community in Rancho Mirage, California is any guide, homes could start at around $1 million.

That’s a significant investment—especially for buyers who aren’t Disney super-fans.

For some, the question is whether the brand magic is worth the price tag.

Whether you love the idea or find it unsettling, Asteria highlights a growing trend: residential communities designed around lifestyle branding.

For older adults looking to relocate, these developments offer convenience and community—but also come with costs, both financial and cultural.

Will Asteria become a sought-after destination or a cautionary tale? Either way, it’s shaping up to be one of the most talked-about housing projects in the country.
