A popular holiday decoration is now linked to fire risk—and it’s sparking concern among safety experts

A warm, flickering candle is a cozy staple in many homes—especially around the holidays.

But if you’ve decorated with certain seasonal items from a major retailer, you may want to act fast.

A new recall is raising serious safety concerns, and it could affect your living room, mantel, or holiday table right now.

Kohl’s has just issued a recall for a popular holiday-themed tea light candle holder after reports of it catching fire.

If you purchased festive home decor from Kohl’s anytime since last fall, it’s time to double-check what’s sitting on your shelf.

Here’s what you need to know to protect your home and your family.

The recall involves about 2,000 St. Nicholas Square Christmas Tea Light Candle Holders, sold between September 2024 and April 2025 both in-store and on Kohls.com.

The product poses a fire hazard, according to a safety alert from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

There have already been two reports of the candle holders catching fire during use.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported—but the potential risk is serious.

If you think you may own this item, here’s how to identify it.

The St. Nicholas Square Christmas Tea Light Candle Holder features a unique Christmas tree design made of plastic horseshoes.

It holds six tea light candles, perfect for adding a warm holiday glow.

The piece is finished with a gold star on top and a base decorated with green plastic garland and red berries.

If this sounds familiar, don’t light another candle until you confirm whether your holder is affected.

What to do if you own one of these holders

Stop using it immediately. Even if you’ve used it before without problems, there’s still a fire risk.

Kohl’s is offering full refunds to all affected customers, whether the item was bought online or in-store.

Here’s how to get your refund:

In-store buyers:
Return the candle holder to any Kohl’s location and speak with customer service. You can choose a refund to your original payment method or a Kohl’s gift card.

Online buyers: Kohl’s is contacting customers directly and providing prepaid return labels to make the return process easy and cost-free.

Tea lights may be small, but they generate intense heat when burning.

If the candle holder is made from materials that aren’t heat-resistant—such as certain plastics—it can crack, melt, or even ignite.

Decorative pieces are often designed for style, not safety.

This recall serves as a reminder to always use heat-safe materials like ceramic, glass, or metal for any open flame use—and to never leave candles unattended.
