It might seem like just another day at the park—kids playing, friends catching up, and the usual rhythm of daily life. But lately, something new has been unfolding in these familiar spaces.
People of all ages are showing up not just for fresh air or exercise, but for something warmer, more meaningful, and deeply needed.
Why this matters more than you might think
It’s no secret that access to nutritious food continues to be a challenge for many. In Los Angeles County, 3 in 10 households experienced food insecurity in 2023.
Seniors face particular hurdles—according to Feeding America, 7.1% of older adults in the US were food insecure in 2021.
Among seniors living with a disability, that number jumped to 13.4%, more than double the rate of those without one.
The burden also falls unevenly across different groups.
Food insecurity rates were more than twice as high among Hispanic/Latino and Black/African American residents (both 38%) compared to white residents (16%).
The need for consistent, dignified access to healthy food is real—and growing.

Three programs, three life stages, one community vision
This initiative isn’t one-size-fits-all. Instead, it supports people across generations through three thoughtfully tailored meal programs:
For youth: The Youth Snack Program is available at 48 parks, offering free, healthy snacks to anyone 17 and under, Monday through Friday from 3:00 to 4:00 pm in a supportive, structured environment.
For teens: At 16 park sites, teens ages 12–18 can enjoy a free evening meal through the Hot Supper Program. Meals are served Monday through Friday at 7:00 pm. Registration is required.
For seniors 60 and older: At 9 locations, older adults can enjoy a nutritious lunch in a social setting, Monday through Friday from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Pre-registration is required for this program.
Breaking down barriers that keep seniors from good nutrition
Seniors often face unique obstacles when it comes to eating well—especially when living alone, on fixed incomes, or without reliable transportation.
Feeding America cites transportation problems as one of the key reasons older adults struggle with hunger.
While traditional Meals on Wheels programs help many, they’re typically reserved for homebound individuals or those who can’t safely shop or cook. Even then, waitlists can be long.

That’s where these park-based programs come in.
Unlike home delivery options, they give seniors a chance to gather in accessible, welcoming spaces—whether arriving by car, rideshare, or public transit.
Meals are shared in person, with others, and often surrounded by other park activities that keep people engaged and moving.
More than just a meal—building community connections
What makes these meals meaningful isn’t just what’s on the plate—it’s the people at the table.
These gatherings provide a simple way for older adults to stay socially connected, which is just as important to long-term health as good nutrition.
Even the placement of these programs reflects deep community care.
To qualify, participating parks must be located within school zones where at least half of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
That ensures these services reach the neighborhoods where food insecurity is most pressing.

A comprehensive network of support
These local efforts are part of a much larger system.
The Los Angeles Regional Food Bank serves over 80,000 seniors every month through its various programs, and coordinates with over 940 food pantries throughout the area.
The park-based programs fill in important gaps by offering reliable meals in friendly, public spaces.

Taking the first step
If you're 60 or older and curious about joining, the process is simple.
You’ll need to register in advance, but once enrolled, you’ll have access to regular meals in a welcoming space—without cost or pressure.
While the Congregate Meals Program doesn’t require payment, a small voluntary contribution is always appreciated. No one is turned away for not contributing.

The ripple effects of community care
These aren’t just meal programs—they’re part of something larger.
When people gather around food in shared spaces, friendships form, loneliness fades, and a deeper sense of belonging takes root.
The expansion of these efforts reflects a growing recognition that food access and social health go hand in hand.
In a region where older adults make up the fastest-growing segment of the homeless population, simple programs like this may play a role in helping people remain housed, nourished, and connected.
