A star’s final flight: “Top Gun” and “Batman Forever” actor, Val Kilmer, dies at 65

A wave of sorrow has swept through Hollywood following the loss of a celebrated screen icon.

Known for his unforgettable roles across some of cinema’s most memorable blockbusters, the actor’s passing at 65 has left a lasting mark on fans and fellow performers alike.

As tributes pour in, many are reflecting on the legacy he leaves behind—one built on charisma, complexity, and timeless performances.

The entertainment world is mourning the passing of one of its most versatile and beloved actors, Val Kilmer, who passed away at the age of 65.

Known for his roles in iconic films such as Top Gun (1986) and Batman Forever (1995), Kilmer's death on April 1st due to pneumonia has left fans and colleagues alike in a state of shock and remembrance. His daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, shared the news with The New York Times.

Val Kilmer's journey in Hollywood was marked by a series of memorable performances that showcased his range and dedication as an actor.

From his breakout role as the charming Iceman in Top Gun to his portrayal of the legendary Jim Morrison in The Doors, Kilmer's talent was undeniable.

His commitment to his craft was further evidenced when he took on the mantle of the Dark Knight in Batman Forever, bringing a new depth to the caped crusader.

However, Kilmer's career faced challenges when he was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014. Despite a grueling battle and a procedure on his trachea that left him with a raspy voice and breathing difficulties, Kilmer's spirit remained unbroken.

Additional speculation was consistently dismissed by Kilmer himself, who was seen in public wearing a tracheostomy tube in October 2015, and then appeared without it a few months later in February.

“I have not had a tumor, or a tumor operation, or any operation,” he clarified in a social media post. “I had a complication where the best way to receive care was to stay under the watchful eye of the UCLA ICU. I am praying for a speedy return to the boards as they say. God bless you all and please don’t worry.”

In October of that year, Kilmer once again took to social media to calm public concern, refuting a report that claimed he had been rushed to the hospital.

In his statement, he explained that he had only gone in to “verify I have no tumor or infection of any kind which was verified by the very caring experts at UCLA.”

Still, not long after making that assurance, he was seen in public with what looked like a tracheostomy tube. Although he later appeared without it in February 2016, the scar from the device remained visible on his throat.

He bravely opened up about his health struggles in a 2017 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, giving fans a glimpse into the personal toll the disease had taken. According to his daughter, he was also able to recover from this.

Kilmer also opened up about his health journey in the 2021 documentary Val, directed by Leo Scott and Ting Poo.

He co-produced the film with his daughter Mercedes and son Jack. The emotional portrait detailed his recovery and received a standing ovation at its Cannes Film Festival premiere.

"He's such a layered person, there's the childlike playfulness, but then there's also the deep wisdom of somebody who's been on a spiritual path their whole life at the same time," Mercedes told PEOPLE in 2021. "He's a lot of opposites that make him incredibly interesting, and it's kind of why our film is so interesting."

Born in Los Angeles in 1959 to Eugene and Gladys Kilmer, Val faced personal loss early on when his parents divorced and, later, when tragedy struck the family in 1977: his younger brother Wesley drowned at just 15 years old.

“He was a genius,” Kilmer told The New York Times in 2002. He described Wesley as a gifted young filmmaker, saying he had the potential to be “another Steven Spielberg or George Lucas.”

Wesley’s passing deeply impacted Kilmer, and not long after, he became the youngest person ever accepted into Juilliard’s prestigious Drama Division—a milestone that marked the beginning of his storied acting career.

“I had a unique experience because I just lost my little brother a week before I started school,” Kilmer shared during a 2005 talk at Juilliard.

“So it was quite an emotional time for me, and in a way, the extremely high standards and the activity of the School I’m sure were good for me, because I was forced to really challenge myself about my very life, you know—what I believe about life and death. For me, it was a great way to progress out of that difficult time, to be thrown into such a great school.”

Although Kilmer landed a few roles on Broadway early in his career, his breakout role in film came in 1984 with Top Secret!—a satirical take on Cold War spy movies and classic Elvis-style musicals.

In the film, Kilmer portrays an American rock star who travels to East Germany and ends up entangled in the resistance movement. Notably, he performed all of his own singing and dancing for the role.

Kilmer’s rise to superstardom was cemented with his role in Top Gun, where he portrayed naval aviator Lt. Tom “Iceman” Kazanski opposite Tom Cruise.

Reflecting on the experience, Kilmer told Larry King in 2013, “It was fun. My guy didn’t like him but it was fun to not like him.”

Following the acclaim he received for Top Gun, Kilmer transitioned into leading roles, most notably taking on the part of Jim Morrison in Oliver Stone’s 1991 biopic The Doors.

Playing the legendary frontman, Kilmer immersed himself in the role—learning all of Morrison’s songs by heart and even adopting his style and mannerisms.

In his personal life, Kilmer married actress Joanne Whalley in 1988 after the two met on the set of Willow. The couple welcomed two children, Mercedes in 1991 and Jack in 1995, before parting ways in 1996.

In a testament to his resilience, Kilmer made a poignant return to the big screen in 2022's Top Gun: Maverick, reprising his role alongside Tom Cruise.

"I just want to say that was pretty emotional," Cruise told Jimmy Kimmel about acting alongside his friend again. "I've known Val for decades, and for him to come back and play that character… he's such a powerful actor that he instantly became that character again."

The late actor maintained a steady career throughout his life, taking on diverse roles and creative projects.

In 2016, he wrote and starred in a one-man stage show titled Mark Twain: Citizen Twain, showcasing his theatrical roots and passion for storytelling.

In his later years, Kilmer also explored the world of visual art, turning to painting and mixed media as a new form of personal expression.

His final Facebook post, a testament to his creative spirit, featured one of his latest artworks.

As we reflect on Val Kilmer's life and career, it's important to celebrate the legacy he leaves behind.
