If you’ve ever used a meal delivery service to make life easier, whether after surgery, during recovery, or simply to skip cooking, there’s a chance you could be owed part of a $4.25 million payout.
With the deadline fast approaching, now’s the time for eligible Americans to file their claims and potentially receive up to $5,000 in compensation.
What’s behind the $4.25 million settlement?
PurFoods, a well-known meal delivery company (you might know them as Mom’s Meals), has been a lifeline for seniors, people recovering from surgery, and anyone needing a helping hand with meal prep. They also serve schools, hospitals, and nursing homes across the country.
But in early 2023, PurFoods experienced a data breach that exposed sensitive information belonging to both customers and employees. The breach, which occurred between January 16 and February 22, 2023, left many people’s personal details vulnerable. According to the lawsuit, PurFoods didn’t have adequate cybersecurity measures in place to prevent the breach.
While PurFoods hasn’t admitted to any wrongdoing, they’ve agreed to a $4.25 million settlement to resolve the claims and avoid a drawn-out legal battle.
Who qualifies for compensation?
Here’s the good news: qualifying is pretty straightforward. You’re eligible if:
- You’re a resident of the United States.
- You received a notice from PurFoods stating your personal information may have been compromised in the breach between January 16 and February 22, 2023.
If you meet these two criteria, you’re in the running! But you’ll need to act fast—claims must be submitted by October 30, 2025.
How much can you receive?
Here's what's available:
- Standard cash payment: Most eligible class members can receive a pro-rated cash payment estimated at about $75.
- Documented losses: If you can prove out-of-pocket expenses related to the breach—such as fraud, identity theft, credit freezes, or professional fees—you can claim up to $5,000 in reimbursement.
- Credit protection: All class members receive three years of free credit monitoring and insurance services.

Protecting yourself from future breaches
While you're filing your claim, it's worth taking steps to protect yourself from similar incidents in the future:
- Monitor your accounts: Check your bank statements, credit reports, and Medicare/insurance statements regularly for unusual activity.
- Freeze your credit: Consider placing a security freeze on your credit reports with all three major bureaus—it's free and prevents new accounts from being opened in your name.
- Update passwords: Use strong, unique passwords for all your online accounts, especially those involving health insurance or financial information.
- Be skeptical of calls: Scammers often target data breach victims with fake 'resolution' calls. Always verify by calling official numbers directly.
