The alleged incident is said to have occurred in Cannes, where Van Damme is accused of accepting five Romanian women as a “gift,” with knowledge that they were connected to a trafficking ring, per details outlined in the complaint obtained by the outlet.
Attorney Adrian Cuculis, representing one of the women, told the outlet the individuals involved “were in a state of vulnerability, with the suspicion that they were exploited within the meaning of Article 182 of the Criminal Code.”
Cuculis told Antena 3 that the incident is connected to a broader investigation into human trafficking and the exploitation of minors, which was initiated in 2020 by Romania’s Prosecutor's Office.
According to the outlet, the next steps involve the High Court of Cassation in France—where the alleged event occurred—authorizing criminal proceedings.
Once approved, the individuals named in the investigation will be summoned to Romania to provide official statements.
Jean-Claude Van Damme rose to fame with the 1988 film Bloodsport and has since become a household name in the action genre with movies like Kickboxer, Double Impact, and The Expendables 2.
