Last October, Costco issued a recall for their Kirkland Signature Smoked Salmon with lot number 8512801270, with best by date of November 13, 2024.
Now, this recall has been updated by the FDA and raised to the highest level of risk – Class 1.
It's crucial to understand that a Class I recall is not a matter to be taken lightly. The FDA states that a Class 1 recall is “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”
The affected salmon was manufactured by Acme Smoked Fish Corp. based in Brooklyn, and was distributed to Costco stores between October 9 to 13, 2024.
While these products have been pulled out from Costco shelves, there’s still the remaining concern that customers might still have these products in their freezers.
These products are contaminated with listeria monocytogenes, which can cause listeriosis. Listeriosis is an infection that primarily impacts older adults, persons with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women and their newborns.
It can cause fever, muscle pain, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, convulsions, diarrhea, or other gastrointestinal concerns. In pregnant women, it can also lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery, or fatal infection of the newborn.
If you find that you have purchased the recalled item, the FDA advises consumers not to consume the product. Instead, you should:
1. Stop using the item immediately.
2. Follow the specific instructions provided by the recall notice, which may include returning the product to the place of purchase for a refund or proper disposal.
3. Monitor yourself and your family members for any signs of illness if you've already consumed the product.
