Alfie Wise, veteran actor and Burt Reynolds' frequent costar, dies at 82

Some actors spend their entire careers chasing the bright lights and marquee billing, while others, often overlooked but deeply respected, quietly become the engine that keeps the stories moving forward without demanding center stage.

Alfie Wise belonged unmistakably to that second group—a consistent and steady presence in a gritty, often unpredictable era of Hollywood dominated by rough-edged action-comedies that thrived on both chaos and charm.

His face, marked by a kind of unassuming familiarity, was instantly recognizable to millions of viewers, even though his name rarely appeared above the title or drew headlines on its own.

Known for his effortless on-screen rapport and recurring collaborations with Burt Reynolds, Wise carved out a long, steady, and quietly admirable career as one of film’s most dependable and enduring supporting players.

Alfie Wise passed away of natural causes on July 22 at the Thomas H. Corey VA Medical Center in Palm Beach, Florida.

He was 82 years old and is survived by his fiancée, Stephanie Bliss. The news was confirmed by The Altoona Mirror and later reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

Though quiet in recent years, his legacy remains etched in an era of American film that prized camaraderie, grit, and humor.

Born in Altoona, Pennsylvania in 1942, Wise served in the US Navy before graduating from Penn State. He made his on-screen debut in the 1972 TV movie Call Her Mom, then gained traction with roles in children’s parody programming like Uncle Croc’s Block.

These early appearances showed his comedic instincts and gave a preview of the kind of energetic, small-statured roles he would later perfect.

That same energy caught the attention of Burt Reynolds, leading to a decade-long run of screen partnerships.

Wise appeared alongside Reynolds in 10 projects, including Smokey and the Bandit, The Cannonball Run, and the ABC detective drama B.L. Stryker.

Though never the lead, he added an essential dynamic to each scene, often as the foil or sidekick with impeccable timing.

Their on-screen relationship translated off-screen as well, with Wise appearing at Reynolds’ 1988 wedding where he joked, “Eighteen years of my life. I thought [the wedding] would be you and I!”

His final screen role came in S Club 7 in Miami, a British pop sitcom filmed in Florida.

After that, Wise stepped away from acting and transitioned into real estate, working for Donohue Real Estate.

The company announced his death in a July 30 Facebook post, remembering him as someone who brought joy to every company gathering.

“We will greatly miss Alfie's sense of humor, positive attitude, and charming personality,” the statement read.

Wise’s passing also drew a tribute from casting director Lori Wyman, who had worked with him on B.L. Stryker and S Club 7.

“Sad to have heard my Pal Alfie Wise passed away,” she wrote on Instagram. “Funny, talented guy!” Her comments reflect how many in the industry saw Wise—as a consistent, warm presence who earned respect from all corners of the set.

He belonged to a category of actors who often go unnoticed but never unappreciated. With a career built on timing, physicality, and total commitment to character, Wise made more of each role than the script demanded.

He was part of a particular cinematic rhythm that doesn't exist in the same way anymore. While Reynolds often played the hero, Wise made sure the story never lost its punch.
