America's Official Language?​

You might assume English is the official language of the United States, but that’s not actually true...

The United States has no official language at the federal level. While English is the de facto language used in government, education, and media, there’s no law declaring it (or any language) as the official national language. Attempts to make English the national language have surfaced in Congress multiple times, but it was only this year that it was declared official!

That said, many individual states do have official languages: most designate English, while some recognize others as well, like Hawaiian in Hawaii or Spanish in parts of New Mexico. It’s a reminder that the U.S. was founded on principles of inclusion and plurality—and its linguistic landscape is as diverse as its people. No official tongue. Just a shared conversation.
