An Unexpected Ancestor
There may be a prehistoric animal still living on Earth, and it could be roaming around your backyard! Any guesses which?
It's a frog!
There is evidence that frogs have roamed the Earth for more than 200 million years. The oldest known "proto-frog" fossil is Triadobatrachus massinoti, dating back to the Early Triassic period, approximately 250 million years ago, in what is now Madagascar. Triadobatrachus exhibited both primitive and frog-like characteristics, such as a broad head and shortened trunk, but it retained a short tail and had more vertebrae than modern frogs.
