Ancient Toilet Wipes

Ever wondered what our ancestors used before the invention of toilet paper? Let’s just say, it wasn’t exactly a "soft and gentle" experience.

In ancient Rome, a common tool was the tersorium, a communal sponge attached to a stick—shared among users and rinsed in salt water or vinegar between turns (yikes!). Over in rural America, corncobs were a popular choice due to their availability and texture. Other materials included moss, leaves, and even seashells, depending on the region and resources available.

Can you imagine using any of these? If you know a cool fact, share it with us here!

When I was in the trucking industry they would have old newspapers in communal outhouse at some of the warehouses we delivered or pick up at. Of course, these were along our southern border.
