Another life lost from this popular drink served in healthcare facilities–Everything you need to know

The GrayVine community, we're here to discuss a serious matter that's been making headlines and have affected many healthcare facilities in the country.

This recent Listeria outbreak has been linked to a range of popular items that provide nourishment, and it's more severe than we might have imagined.

The outbreak has tragically resulted in another death and numerous hospitalizations already, prompting a widespread recall of the products in question.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been investigating this outbreak, which has spread across 21 states, causing illnesses primarily among patients in hospitals and long-term care facilities.

The culprits are shakes sold under the brand names Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial.

The company behind these products, Lyons Magnus LLC, has issued a voluntary recall for multiple frozen supplemental shakes that are still within their shelf-life.

The focus of the contamination has been traced back to shakes manufactured by Prairie Farms Dairy, Inc. at their Fort Wayne, Indiana facility.

As of February 24, the FDA reported 38 known cases of illness related to this outbreak. All but one of these individuals were hospitalized, and 12 have sadly passed away.

It's a sobering reminder that nearly 90% of those affected were already in vulnerable health, residing in long-term care facilities or hospitalized for other reasons.

This isn't the first time this particular strain of listeria has caused concern. The CDC had been tracking the same outbreak since 2018, with cases continuing to appear through 2024 and 2025.

Despite previous investigations, the source of the illnesses had remained elusive until now.

If you or a loved one enjoys frozen shakes, particularly those who are in the higher-risk categories such as older adults or those with weakened immune systems, it's crucial to check your freezers.

So far, the 21 states with related listeria cases include:
  • Alabama
  • California
  • Colorado
  • Connecticut
  • Florida
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Maryland
  • Michigan
  • Minnesota
  • Missouri
  • Nevada
  • New York
  • North Carolina
  • Ohio
  • Oklahoma
  • Pennsylvania
  • Tennessee
  • Texas
  • Washington
  • West Virginia

The recalled products have “best buy” dates between February 21, 2025, and February 21, 2026. Here's the full list of shakes that you should avoid:

Listeriosis, caused by the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes, is a severe and sometimes fatal infection. It's particularly dangerous for older adults, pregnant individuals, and those with compromised immune systems.

Symptoms can take weeks to manifest after consuming contaminated food, and they can be mistaken for other illnesses due to their flu-like nature.
