Apple Butter

If autumn had a scent, it’d be this recipe simmering away—sweet apples, warm cinnamon, and a hint of cloves filling the kitchen. Apple butter takes a little time, but every spoonful tastes like homemade comfort.

Despite the name, there’s no butter in apple butter! It’s a smooth, spiced fruit spread made by slowly cooking apples with sugar and spices until they become thick, dark, and velvety. Think of it as a richer, deeper version of applesauce—one that’s perfect for toast, biscuits, or even by the spoonful.

Apple butter is endlessly versatile!
Try it:
  • Spread on toast, biscuits, or pancakes
  • Swirled into oatmeal or yogurt
  • As a condiment on a cheese board
  • In baking — swap it in for applesauce or pumpkin
  • Or simply enjoy a spoonful straight from the jar (no judgment here!)

It also pairs beautifully with sharp cheeses, roast pork, or a cup of hot tea.

How to Store or Freeze:
  • Refrigerate: Transfer cooled apple butter to containers, leaving about ½ inch of space at the top. Keeps up to 2 weeks in the fridge.
  • Freeze: Store cooled apple butter in freezer containers, again leaving space for expansion. It’ll last up to 3 months frozen. Thaw in the fridge before using.
Ingredients:
  • 5½ pounds apples, peeled, cored, and finely chopped
  • 4 cups sugar
  • 2 to 3 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
Directions:

  1. Place apples in a 6-quart slow cooker.
  2. In a bowl, combine sugar, cinnamon, cloves, and salt; pour over apples and mix well.
  3. Cover and cook on high for 1 hour.
  4. Reduce heat to low, cover, and cook until thickened and dark brown, 9–11 hours, stirring occasionally (more often as it thickens).
  5. Uncover and cook on low for 1 hour more.
  6. For extra-smooth texture, whisk or blend until silky.
  7. Spoon into freezer containers, leaving ½-inch headspace. Cover and refrigerate or freeze.
