Critical recall issued for popular wheelchair component

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a recall for a speed control dial used with the Permobil SmartDrive MX2+ Power Assist Device.

This device is part of certain MX2-3DCK/MX2-3DC wheelchairs, and the recall follows numerous customer complaints and reports of serious injuries.

The component was sold between August 17, 2023, and November 21, 2024, meaning many individuals may be affected by this safety concern.

Max Mobility, LLC reached out to its customers on December 20, 2024, after receiving 646 complaints, including three severe injury reports involving fractures of the hip, leg, and ankle.

Understanding the risks

The FDA has highlighted that the faulty speed control dial could cause wheelchairs to move unpredictably or stop abruptly, posing significant risks to users.

Injuries could range from minor cuts to more severe conditions such as bone fractures, muscle strains, or concussions.

The danger also extends to bystanders who could be hurt if a wheelchair operates uncontrollably.

Max Mobility has traced the issue to a change in the printed circuit board assembly of the dial and is currently working on a redesign to address these performance inconsistencies.

Taking action: Replacement and safety measures

Max Mobility is taking steps to ensure user safety, advising customers to request a replacement unit through the Permobil website. Technical support is also available for those who need assistance.

The redesigned dials are expected to start shipping in mid-January, and customers should dispose of their old units once they receive the replacement.

This recall serves as a reminder of the importance of product safety, particularly for devices that play such a crucial role in the daily lives of individuals with mobility challenges.

It also highlights the ongoing need for vigilance in consumer safety, especially given other recent recalls of various products.
