Attention coffee lovers! Is your Stanley mug a ticking time bomb? Over 2 million recalled – find out why!

For many of us, the day doesn't truly begin until we've had that first sip of coffee or tea from our favorite mug. But for owners of certain Stanley travel mugs, that comforting morning ritual could come with an unexpected twist—not from caffeine, but from a hidden safety risk.

What should be a simple pleasure could quickly turn into a dangerous situation, leaving you with more than just a burnt tongue.

On December 12, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission brewed up a storm when it announced the recall of approximately 2.6 million Stanley mugs. The affected models are the Switchback and Trigger Action travel mugs, which have been found to have faulty lids.

These lids, when exposed to heat and the normal twisting motion of opening and closing, can shrink and detach unexpectedly. If you’re holding a cup of hot coffee when this happens, you could be in for a nasty spill and potential burns.

So far, Stanley has received 91 reports of such incidents worldwide, with 38 resulting in burn injuries.

In the United States alone, there have been 16 reports, including two injuries. It’s a sobering reminder that even the most reliable products can have flaws.

Which Mugs Are in Hot Water?

The recall affects a range of Stanley's double-walled stainless steel travel mugs in various colors, including white, black, and green. These come in 12, 16, and 20-ounce sizes, all with polypropylene lids.

The Stanley logo is prominently displayed on the front and bottom of each mug. Depending on the model, these mugs were sold for between $20 and $50 at major retailers like Amazon, Walmart, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Target, and others, both in-store and online, from June 2016 through December 2024.

Here’s a quick brew of the affected models and their numbers:

  • Switchback 12 ounces: 20-01437
  • Switchback 16 ounces: 20-01436, 20-02211
  • Trigger Action 12 ounces: 20-02033, 20-02779, 20-02825
  • Trigger Action 16 ounces: 20-02030, 20-02745, 20-02957
  • Trigger Action 20 ounces: 20-02034, 20-02746
If you own one of these mugs, it’s time to check the model number on the bottom and take action.

Why This Matters

While it might seem like a minor inconvenience to replace a mug lid, the potential for injury is significant. Hot beverages can cause severe burns, and a spill could lead to further accidents, especially for those of us who may not move as quickly as we used to.

It’s also a matter of trust in the products we use daily. When a brand as reputable as Stanley issues a recall, it’s a reminder to stay vigilant about the items we often take for granted.
