Avoid a $127 nightmare: Find out which parking rules could cost you big time!

As the ash settles and communities begin to rebuild after the devastating Eaton Fire, residents of Pasadena and surrounding areas are facing a new challenge: the reinstatement of parking regulations.

The City of Pasadena, in an effort to restore order and routine, has reactivated parking rules that were temporarily suspended in the wake of the disaster.

With these changes come hefty fines for non-compliance, and it's crucial for locals and visitors alike to stay informed to avoid unnecessary penalties.

On February 3, 2025, just a month following the catastrophic blaze that claimed 17 lives and incinerated over 14,000 acres and 9,4000 buildings, Pasadena's Department of Transportation brought back parking enforcement with a clear message: follow the rules or face a $127 fine.

The city's parking enforcement includes a 72-hour parking limit, restrictions on oversized vehicles, and street sweeping regulations.

These rules are designed to keep the streets clear and accessible for residents, emergency services, and the ongoing cleanup efforts.

On February 17, preferential parking districts will be reinstated. This means that vehicles without the appropriate permits will be subject to fines if parked in these zones.

Wardens will be on the lookout for violations, so ensure your permit is up to date and clearly displayed.

The next wave of changes arrives on March 1, when overnight parking restrictions will resume. Parking will be prohibited between 2 am and 6 am, a regulation aimed at managing street congestion and maintaining public safety.

For those with questions or to report parking violations, the Pasadena Department of Transportation can be reached at (626) 744-6440.

The city is also encouraging families affected by the fire to apply for preferential parking districts and overnight permits to ease their transition back to normalcy.

The Eaton Fire, which began on January 7, 2025, was one of several wildfires that ravaged Los Angeles County, leading to the evacuation of over 30,000 people.

Fueled by Santa Ana winds and low humidity, the fire spread rapidly, prompting the National Weather Service to issue its most severe fire weather warning.

Similarly, the City of Malibu is cautiously reintroducing parking restrictions in areas spared by the Palisades fire, which also ignited on January 7 and destroyed over 23,000 acres.

Malibu’s director of public safety, Susan Dueñas, acknowledges the delicate balance between being sensitive to the community's recent hardships and the need to manage the influx of visitors as Pacific Coast Highway reopens.

She said, "We’re trying to be a little bit sensitive to the fact that the community has been through a lot. With Pacific Coast Highway reopening, however, visitors have started returning to Malibu and more enforcement is needed."
