Its wooden segments snapped neatly into place with that unmistakable sound every handyman (or handywoman!) remembers. Do you remember using one?

It’s a folding carpenter’s ruler, a staple in toolboxes long before metal tape measures came along. Made of wood and brass, these rulers unfolded to stretch six feet or more, then folded back with a satisfying snap. My father used this many times for different things. We still have it but I hardly use it. Rare occasion I have used it to measure things.

My dad had one and it was probably bought back in the 40 or 50's. lts the only ruler that l remember him using. l still have the ruler and the hammer that he used. He was killed in 1966 so l treasure everything that was his
