Beloved James Bond icon from three classic 007 films passes away—fans heartbroken by family’s touching tribute

The world of cinema is mourning the loss of a true legend.

Joe Don Baker, the versatile actor who left an indelible mark on the James Bond franchise and the hearts of movie lovers everywhere, has passed away at the age of 89.

As news of his passing spreads, fans and colleagues alike are reflecting on a remarkable career that spanned nearly five decades—and a life defined by warmth, curiosity, and kindness.

A double agent in the Bond universe

For many, Joe Don Baker’s name is synonymous with the thrilling world of 007. Uniquely, he played not one, but two very different roles across three iconic Bond films—a rare feat in the franchise’s storied history.

Baker first entered the Bond universe in 1987’s The Living Daylights. He delivered a memorable performance as Brad Whitaker, a larger-than-life, power-hungry arms dealer obsessed with military history and weaponry.

His portrayal brought a chilling charisma to the villainous role, earning him a spot among the Bond franchise’s most notable adversaries.

But Baker’s Bond journey didn’t end there. In a twist worthy of the series itself, he returned in 1995’s GoldenEye—this time as an ally.

As the cigar-chomping, Hawaiian-shirt-wearing CIA agent Jack Wade, Baker brought humor and heart to the role.

He reprised the character in 1997’s Tomorrow Never Dies, further cementing his place as a fan favorite.

A career beyond Bond

While his 007 roles earned him pop culture immortality, Joe Don Baker’s body of work reached far beyond spy thrillers. Born in Groesbeck, Texas, he began his acting career in the mid-1960s with his television debut on Honey West.

One of his most acclaimed performances came in the 1985 BBC miniseries Edge of Darkness, which earned him a BAFTA nomination. His nuanced performance as the eccentric yet endearing CIA operative won over international audiences and critics alike.

His final film role came in 2012’s Mud—a quiet, powerful send-off to a long and varied career.

A Life of curiosity, compassion, and quiet impact

Outside of Hollywood, Baker was known for his intellectual curiosity, love of reading, and deep affection for animals—especially cats. According to a statement released by his family:

“Throughout his life, Joe Don touched many lives with his warmth and compassion, leaving an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him.”

“As we say goodbye to Joe Don, we hold onto the memories and the love he shared with us."

“Though he may no longer be with us in body, his spirit will always remain—a guiding light in the lives he touched. Rest in peace, Joe Don. You will be dearly missed but never forgotten,” they added.

Baker is survived by relatives in his hometown of Groesbeck, Texas. Though he never had children, he was married to Maria Dolores Rivero-Torres from 1969 to 1980. A funeral service will be held later this month in California.
