Beloved soap icon Chris Robinson dies at 86—remembering a life on and off screen

The world of daytime television has lost one of its most beloved and enduring stars.

Chris Robinson, whose unmistakable presence brought life to iconic roles on General Hospital and The Bold and the Beautiful, has passed away at the age of 86.

For millions of fans, Robinson was more than just a familiar face—he was part of the family, a comforting companion through decades of daily drama, romance, and emotional storytelling.

Born on November 5, 1938, in sunny West Palm Beach, Florida, Chris Robinson launched his acting journey during the golden era of television.

His breakout role came in 1965, when he portrayed Technical Sgt. Sandy Komansky in the World War II drama 12 O’Clock High.

The role showcased his natural charisma and screen presence, setting the stage for a prolific career that would stretch across more than 60 years.

But it was in 1978 that Robinson found his defining role—Dr. Rick Webber on General Hospital.

His arrival in Port Charles brought with it some of the show’s most emotionally charged and memorable storylines.

As the two-time husband of Dr. Lesley Webber, played by Denise Alexander, and the adoptive father of Laura Spencer, portrayed by Genie Francis, Robinson's character quickly became central to the soap’s narrative heartbeat.

His portrayal of Dr. Webber—empathetic, deeply human, and often caught in complicated personal dynamics—resonated with viewers.

Over time, he became a trusted and consistent presence, someone fans turned to as much for comfort as for compelling drama.

A legacy on General Hospital and beyond

In a heartfelt statement, General Hospital producers paid tribute to Robinson’s contribution to the show's success: “General Hospital’s enduring legacy owes a debt of gratitude to Chris Robinson and his portrayal of Dr. Rick Webber. Our hearts go out to his family and friends as they mourn their loss. May he rest in peace.”

Robinson’s time on the show wasn’t without real-life challenges.

In 1985, he faced legal troubles after pleading guilty to federal income tax evasion.

Yet even in that difficult moment, his resilience and the loyalty of his fans shone through.

Robinson continued to appear on General Hospital, serving his four-month sentence under a unique work-release program.

He was allowed to film during the day and report to prison at night and on weekends—a real-life twist that felt pulled straight from a soap opera script and only added to the legend of Dr. Webber.

Beyond Port Charles

Robinson’s talent was not confined to one show or one network.

Across his career, he appeared in more than 100 film and television roles, including a memorable stint on The Bold and the Beautiful.

His versatility, professionalism, and screen presence made him a favorite of casting directors, and a trusted figure in the world of daytime drama.

Even as time marched on, Robinson remained dedicated to his craft. His final performance came in August 2022, when he played Ted Hurst in the film Just for a Week.

It was a fitting farewell—a last role from a man who had spent decades breathing life into characters and connecting with audiences.

A life beyond the spotlight

Away from the cameras, Robinson’s personal life was just as full.

He is survived by his fourth wife, Jacquie Shane-Robinson, and a large, loving family. That family includes sons Shane, Coby, Christian, Taylor, Christopher Robinson, and Christopher Lance—as well as five grandchildren.

While his professional legacy lives on in reruns and recordings, his personal legacy is reflected in the lives he touched and the family he helped build.
