Butt seriously: Experts share the best way to wipe

You’ve likely been doing it for decades without giving it much thought.

But for a growing number of people, one daily habit is causing more irritation than relief.

That discomfort “down there” might not be something you have to live with—it might just be about changing how you clean up.

Doctors are now warning that one of the most overlooked hygiene routines is being done wrong by a lot of people.

A dermatologist has revealed that many patients with irritated skin around their backside are suffering from a condition caused by poor wiping habits.

It’s called perianal dermatitis, and it’s often the result of scrubbing too hard or using the wrong products.

Some cases are so extreme that a condition called Polished Anus Syndrome has become a known outcome of aggressive wiping.

And no, this isn’t a joke—it’s a real thing seen in medical clinics.

One of the first recommendations from experts is to ditch those pre-moistened wipes.

Even the “all-natural” ones can cause allergic reactions or irritate delicate skin.

This is often because of chemicals added to prevent bacteria, which don’t wash off immediately.

Repeated exposure can lead to painful rashes, even if you think you’re being extra clean.

If wipes are out, does that mean dry toilet paper is better? Not exactly.

Experts argue that cleaning your skin without water doesn’t actually get the job done.

In fact, ancient cultures like the Romans used damp sponges—so the idea of adding water isn’t new.

So what’s the best option? Bidets are gaining favor among those looking for a cleaner and gentler solution.

While more common overseas, these water-spraying attachments are growing in popularity due to how effective and soothing they are.

And if plumbing installation sounds intimidating, there’s another method to consider.

A doctor recommends using soft, thick paper towels moistened with water from a squirt bottle.

It’s important to use a towel brand that’s not too rough but can still hold up when wet.

While this approach works well, remember that these wipes are not flushable. Used towels must go into the trash—not the toilet—to avoid clogs.

If throwing things in the bin isn’t appealing, lightly wetting some strong toilet paper could be a backup method. But drying thoroughly afterward is key.

Moisture left behind can lead to fungal infections or something called intertrigo.

That’s why experts say skipping the drying step is “weird” and potentially problematic.

The final step in the proper routine is wiping in the right direction. Front to back is the safest route, especially for women, to avoid infections.

Though there’s no hard research proving it, the logic holds strong in the medical community.

Some say sitting helps keep things open for better access, but standing is fine if that’s more comfortable.

If you’ve tried it all and still feel uncomfortable, there could be a deeper issue.

Problems like weakened sphincter muscles may cause leakage or hygiene challenges.

Dry-wipers especially may notice that it takes more effort to get clean.

In such cases, experts suggest switching to a water-based method like a bidet for better results.
