Buying a car just got easier—how Amazon and Hertz are teaming up to change the process

Shopping for a used car hasn’t always been a pleasant experience—long hours at the dealership, confusing prices, and the pressure to act fast.

But a new partnership between Amazon and Hertz is aiming to change that.

If you’re comfortable buying groceries or books online, imagine doing the same with a car—right from your living room.

This effort is designed to take the guesswork out of buying used vehicles, especially for older adults looking for a simpler and more transparent process.

It could be the beginning of a new era in car shopping.

How the Amazon and Hertz partnership works

Hertz, one of the largest and most familiar rental car companies in the US, is now working directly with Amazon to list its used vehicles through Amazon Autos.

The pilot program has launched in four major cities—Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, and Seattle—with plans to expand nationwide to all 45 Hertz Car Sales locations.

Here’s how the process works:

  1. Search locally: Visit Amazon Autos and browse used Hertz cars available within 75 miles of your zip code. You’ll find brands like Toyota, Ford, Chevrolet, and Nissan.
  2. Compare and review: Each listing includes high-quality photos, a condition report, and a vehicle history. Amazon even shows how the price compares to Kelley Blue Book estimates.
  3. Apply for financing: Choose from multiple loan options through trusted lenders—all online.
  4. Buy with ease: Complete the entire transaction digitally, including signing the documents.
  5. Pick up your vehicle: Head to your nearest Hertz Car Sales center to collect your car once the sale is complete.

Why this matters—especially for older buyers

For many older adults, the idea of negotiating at a dealership or deciphering financing terms can be stressful.

This partnership aims to reduce that friction by offering:

  • Clarity and transparency: All vehicles go through a 115-point inspection and come with a 12-month/12,000-mile limited powertrain warranty.
  • Peace of mind: Every car includes 24-hour roadside assistance and a seven-day/250-mile buy-back guarantee.
  • Flexibility: Amazon Autos is available 24/7, so you can shop on your own time—no appointments needed.
  • Trustworthy inventory: Hertz’s rental cars are typically serviced and inspected regularly, often more frequently than privately owned vehicles.

This new model empowers buyers to make informed decisions without pressure or guesswork.

What about concerns over rental cars?

Some may hesitate at the idea of buying a former rental vehicle, but Hertz emphasizes that their cars are maintained to a high standard.

As part of its rental fleet, each car receives consistent upkeep and is cleaned and serviced more often than the average personal vehicle.

Additionally, if you're unhappy with the purchase, the buy-back guarantee gives you a no-risk way out—just return the car within a week (or 250 miles) for a full refund.

A digital shift in how we buy big-ticket items

This collaboration reflects a growing trend of bringing large purchases—like cars—into the online space.

Instead of relying on classified ads or driving from lot to lot, you can now compare multiple vehicles, read reviews, and arrange financing without leaving home.

For older adults supporting children or grandchildren with their first vehicle purchase, this platform also makes it easier to guide and compare options—even across state lines.

It's a digital upgrade to a traditionally outdated process.

What comes next?

The initial launch is already live in four cities, but expansion plans are in motion to reach all 45 Hertz Car Sales locations nationwide.

Amazon Autos currently works with dealerships in over 130 cities across the country, and Hertz is its first major rental fleet partner.

As more locations and vehicles are added, this could soon become a go-to option for anyone looking for a simple, secure, and transparent used car purchase.
