Capes Worn During Bull Fights

Why are bullfighter capes always red?

We've all seen it: the matador waving a red cape, the bull charging straight at it. Cartoons would have us believe it’s because bulls can’t resist that fiery color, right? But here’s the truth—bulls can’t even see red. They’re actually color-blind to it, and the real reason they charge has nothing to do with color; it's all about movement. The cape, known as a muleta, only makes its entrance in the final act of a bullfight, when the matador uses it to conceal a hidden sword. The red fabric? It’s simply there to mask bloodstains—a practical, if a bit gruesome, choice!
