Costco recalls salsa over contamination concerns—here’s what to know

What’s in your fridge might be more than just spicy—it could be splintery.

One popular grocery item, sold at Costco and other retailers, has just been recalled after an unexpected contamination was discovered.

And it’s not a new ingredient—it’s something that shouldn’t be in food at all.

Here’s what you need to check before your next chip dip.

San Juan Salsa Co. has issued a recall of several salsa products after a key ingredient—cilantro supplied by SupHerb Farms—was found to potentially contain small pieces of wood.

The company says the salsa was made between December 19, 2024, and March 17, 2025, and it is being recalled out of an abundance of caution.

According to the recall, SupHerb Farms’ cilantro has already led to a public health alert for other products earlier this month.

While no injuries have been reported and the manufacturer believes its “internal manufacturing process eliminates the potential for wood particles,” the recall remains in effect.

All sizes of these salsas are affected. While the 32-ounce Medium Salsa sold at Costco received a specific alert, the recall applies to products sold through other stores as well.

What to do if you bought one

San Juan Salsa Co. recommends that anyone with a recalled product not eat it.

Instead, customers should throw it away or return it to the store where it was purchased for a full refund or replacement.

Products made after March 17 are not affected by this recall.

More than 96,000 pounds of cilantro from SupHerb Farms have been recalled due to the same contamination issue, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

The same batch of cilantro was previously linked to a public health alert for multiple soups, making this an ongoing concern beyond just salsa.
