Coyote in the city: Find out what really happened to the coyote found at this ALDI store!

Imagine you're perusing the aisles of your local ALDI, your shopping list in hand, when suddenly you come face-to-face with... a coyote?

That's exactly what happened to shoppers at a Chicago ALDI store, and the story of the coyote's chilly hideout has since taken the internet by storm. How did the coyote even get there?

The scene unfolded at the Humboldt Park ALDI, where a now-viral video captured the moment a police officer carefully extracted the coyote from its unconventional refuge among the refrigerated produce.

The footage shows the officer gently pulling the animal's legs, easing the coyote out from its cold corner to the surprise of onlookers.

This wild encounter occurred on a Monday morning around 9:45 AM, when Chicago Animal Care and Control, alongside Chicago police, responded to the scene at the 800 block of North Kedzie Avenue.

They were able to “safely take custody of the coyote,” ensuring that no injuries were reported from this unexpected visit.

But what became of our four-legged friend after its grocery store adventure?

The coyote was entrusted to the care of Flint Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation, an organization dedicated to the healing and release of wild animals.

The coyote arrived at their facility around 7 p.m. that same day, thanks to the swift action of a volunteer who transported the animal from Chicago Animal Care and Control.

Flint Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation took to social media to update concerned citizens and curious netizens alike.

“The coyote is unharmed, but he is scared,” they shared. Their plan? To nurture the coyote back to a state of calm and release it back into the wild when it was ready.

So, how did a coyote end up in the refrigerated section of a bustling urban grocery store? Flint Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation has a theory.

"We theorize that the coyote entered an open door of the grocery store trying to escape human traffic and then hid in the refrigerated section in an attempt to hide from people inside the store," the group said on Facebook.

This isn't the first time Chicago has seen such an event. The city was previously host to a similar incident in 2007 when a coyote sauntered into a Quiznos sandwich shop.

Experts took this opportunity to educate the public on coyote behavior, particularly during January through March, which marks the coyote mating season.

During this period, coyotes are more active, often venturing further as they search for mates and establish territories.

While these creatures are generally not a threat to humans, it's wise to avoid interaction and secure food sources to minimize encounters, as advised by animal control.
