Danger in the aisle: Albertsons recalls food over health risk—Are you affected?

If you’ve recently picked up a healthy option from your local grocery store deli, it’s time to check your fridge—and fast.

Albertsons Companies, one of the nation’s largest supermarket chains, has just issued a major recall across 11 states and Washington, DC, after a Salmonella scare that has left nearly 30 people sick and sent nine to the hospital.

Here at The GrayVine, we know food safety is no laughing matter, especially for those who remember when “food poisoning” meant a bad night, not a trip to the ER.

What’s Behind the Recall?
The recall centers on three store-made Greek salad products sold at Albertsons-owned stores, including ACME, Safeway, Kings Food Markets, Balducci’s Food Lovers Market, Shaw’s, and Star Market.

The culprit? Cucumbers supplied by Bedner Growers, Inc. of Boynton Beach, Florida, which tested positive for Salmonella during a recent FDA inspection.

The outbreak has already sickened 26 people and hospitalized nine, according to the FDA.

This isn’t Bedner Growers’ first brush with Salmonella, either. In 2024, the farm was linked to two other outbreaks involving different Salmonella strains.

Which Products Are Affected?
If you shopped at any of the following stores between May 20 and May 24, 2025, you’ll want to check your purchases for these specific Greek salad products:
  • SALAD GREEK AUTHENTIC FS (UPC: 2930700000-00901)
    • Sold May 23-24 at ACME, Safeway, Kings Food Markets, and Balducci’s in Connecticut, Delaware, DC, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.
  • READYMEALS SALAD GREEK SS (UPC: 29248300000)
    • Sold May 20-24 at Shaw’s and Star Market in Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
  • SALAD GREEK FS (UPC: 29232900000)
    • Sold May 20-24 at Shaw’s and Star Market in Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
If you have any of these products in your fridge, don’t take any chances—toss them out or return them to the store for a full refund.

Why Is Salmonella So Dangerous?
Salmonella isn’t just a minor inconvenience. For healthy adults, it can mean a few miserable days of fever, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

But for older adults, young children, and anyone with a weakened immune system, Salmonella can be life-threatening.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that Salmonella causes about 1.35 million infections, 26,500 hospitalizations, and 420 deaths in the US every year.

Symptoms usually appear 6 hours to 6 days after eating contaminated food and can last 4 to 7 days. If you or someone you know experiences severe symptoms—like high fever, blood in the stool, or signs of dehydration—seek medical attention right away.

How Did This Happen?
The FDA’s investigation traced the outbreak to cucumbers grown by Bedner Growers.

Environmental samples from the farm matched the Salmonella strain found in sick patients using advanced Whole Genome Sequencing. This high-tech detective work is helping public health officials pinpoint the source of outbreaks faster than ever before.

Unfortunately, this isn’t an isolated incident. Food recalls due to contamination, allergens, and other hazards are on the rise.

In 2025 alone, dozens of recalls have been issued for everything from salad greens to frozen berries. It’s a reminder that even foods we think of as healthy and safe can sometimes carry hidden risks.

What Should You Do Now?
  • Check your fridge: If you bought any of the recalled Greek salads, don’t eat them. Throw them away or return them to the store for a refund.
  • Watch for symptoms: If you or someone in your household develops symptoms of Salmonella after eating a recalled product, contact your healthcare provider.
  • Contact Albertsons: For questions about the recall, call Albertsons Companies’ Customer Service Center at 1-877-723-3929 (Monday–Friday, 5 a.m.–9 p.m. PST).
While you can’t control what happens on the farm, you can take steps to reduce your risk at home:

- Wash produce thoroughly under running water, even if you plan to peel it.
- Keep raw foods separate from ready-to-eat items to avoid cross-contamination.
- Refrigerate perishable foods promptly and don’t let leftovers linger.
- Stay up to date on recalls by checking the FDA’s website or signing up for alerts.
