Some safety products meant to provide peace of mind at home may be putting people in more danger than they think.

Items widely available online were removed from circulation following a report that someone got hurt.

The recall is raising concerns, especially for older adults who rely on support tools at home.

Federal officials are now urging people to act fast to prevent further harm.



Federal safety regulators have announced a recall of about 94,800 adult portable bed rails sold online by a specific seller. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said the products failed to meet federal safety standards and have been tied to a risk of entrapment and asphyxiation.

The products were sold through major retailers online between September 2023 and January 2025.

Prices ranged between $33 and $43.


The bed rails, manufactured overseas, are made of white metal tubing and feature a gray foam rubber grip. They come with a fabric pouch and have two support legs for added balance. The models are approximately two feet wide and can be adjusted to between 18 to 22 inches in height.

The rails failed to include required warning labels, according to the CPSC. According to the recall notice, the design creates a serious risk. Users may become trapped between the bed rail and mattress, or within parts of the rail frame itself.

This can result in difficulty breathing or being unable to call for help—outcomes that can be deadly.

Federal officials said at least one person was injured when one of the rails broke during use.

That person fell from the bed, highlighting the potential for structural failure in addition to the entrapment hazard.

Consumers are being told to stop using the product immediately. The store responsible for the sales is offering free replacements to those who reach out.

Customers can call 888-438-3220 to get more information and directions on how to proceed. Disposal instructions will also be provided to ensure others aren’t put at risk.

Federal safety standards are in place to prevent tragedies like these, but not all products comply. Officials remind the public to look for certifications and warning labels before purchasing support products.

These rails did not meet required safety thresholds, which increases the likelihood of a dangerous incident.

Experts say there are alternatives that may help provide support with less risk. These include lowering the bed, adding fall mats, or installing wall-mounted grab bars. Working with an occupational therapist may also help identify safer home options.

The CPSC has handled other similar cases in the past. Bed rails, while intended to offer extra security, have previously been connected to injuries and deaths, particularly among older adults.

This recall joins a growing list of home care products that have been pulled for safety concerns. As more people plan to age in place, experts are reminding households to be cautious about what items they use.

Not all products sold online are thoroughly vetted, and some can slip through safety reviews.
