The dire wolf: A legendary predator revived

The dire wolf (Aenocyon dirus) has captivated our imaginations for generations, especially with its dramatic appearances in popular media like Game of Thrones.

By using ancient DNA, cloning, and gene-editing technology, Colossal’s scientists have created three dire wolf pups, bringing a hybrid species into existence that mirrors the extinct creature from long ago.

The science behind this groundbreaking resurrection

The journey to revive the dire wolf began with the extraction of ancient DNA from fossils—specifically, a 13,000-year-old tooth and a 72,000-year-old skull.

From these precious remnants, scientists successfully created two high-quality genomes that revealed the dire wolf’s unique traits, including its distinctive white coat and strong, muscular build.

Since modern gray wolves share 99.5% of their DNA with the dire wolf, they became the basis for the project.

Using CRISPR technology, the scientists made precise genetic edits to gray wolf cells, targeting 20 genetic variants across 14 genes.

The modified cells were then cloned and transferred into domestic dog eggs, which were implanted into surrogate mothers.

The result? Two male pups born on October 1, 2024, and a female pup on January 30, 2025.

A new home for these ancient pups


These remarkable pups now live on a 2,000-acre facility designed for their safety and research.

The area is enclosed with high-security fencing, and drones and live cameras continuously monitor their activities.

Certified by the American Humane Society and registered with the US Department of Agriculture, the facility ensures the animals’ well-being.

Though the pups have been habituated to humans, they exhibit natural behaviors and are gradually exploring their vast habitat.

Researchers are eagerly observing these pups as they study de-extinction and its broader implications.
