The resale market for Birkins is thriving, with preloved luxury shops like Rebag and Fashionphile selling these bags for tens of thousands of dollars.
Amid this frenzy, affordable dupes have emerged, such as the $80 Walmart “Wirkin,” which went viral for offering a taste of luxury to those who can't afford the real deal, as these dupes have retailed between $78 to $102 only.
The dupes come in many styles and colors, from green, orange, blue, and gray, but the actual original bag remains too expensive for a majority of shoppers.
The dupes became popular on social media, quickly garnering a following as the “Wirkin”, also known as the Walmart or working-class Birkin.

"I love this bag. I love the concept that we can have people who would normally not have access to that kind of luxury get something similar and feel like they have a nice bag," said social media user @LastingLooks during the frenzy last year. "It levels the playing field."
Getting an actual Birkin bag is also a much more challenging tasks, considering that the bag has a quota system for many styles such as the Birkin, Kelly, and Constance bags. Clients are also not allowed to purchase more than one quota bag per year.
At Sotheby’s, the Birkin bags are priced from $15,000 up to $315,000.
Despite the introduction of dupes, the demand for genuine Birkin bags remains high. Hermes' consolidated revenue climbed to nearly $16 billion in 2024, up 15 percent from the previous year, indicating that the allure of the Birkin is far from fading.
"For most, the only way to have one immediately is to buy one secondhand through an online auctioneer," Alex Beene, financial literacy instructor for the University of Tennessee at Martin, said.
"And while the company did initially come out against retailers like Walmart that were selling bags that looked similar for far cheaper, their tune has changed out of the realization it hasn't decreased demand for the real deal." he added.
