DHL is pausing some deliveries to US consumers—here's what that means for your online orders

Have you recently ordered something special from overseas—a luxury item, electronics, or even a unique gift for a loved one—and now you're wondering where it is?

If you've ever relied on DHL Express to bring those packages to your doorstep, there’s a new policy you’ll want to be aware of.

And while it may not affect all shoppers, it could change how—and what—you order internationally moving forward.

Starting April 21, DHL Express is temporarily suspending deliveries of international consumer shipments valued over $800 to individuals in the United States.

The move follows recent changes in US customs regulations that have made processing high-value shipments more time-consuming, triggering delays across the shipping industry.

What changed and why it matters

The shift stems from new US customs rules that took effect April 5.

The threshold for "formal entry" processing was lowered from $2,500 to $800—meaning more shipments now require detailed paperwork, extra inspection, and longer processing times.

DHL, like many other carriers, is adapting to these regulations.

The company posted the update quietly, but its metadata shows the change had been in the works behind the scenes for some time.

Will your packages be affected?

The policy specifically affects business-to-consumer shipments over $800, such as when you order directly from an international retailer.

That could include clothing, tech, or other higher-priced goods.

However, shipments valued under $800—no matter who they're from—won’t be affected.

And business-to-business shipments will still be processed, though they may face longer delivery times as customs backlogs are resolved.

Is this temporary—or just the beginning?

DHL has called this a "temporary measure," though they haven’t provided an end date.

The company has said it will continue working with customers to stay compliant with US customs rules, including upcoming updates taking effect May 2.

This also comes shortly after Hongkong Post halted sea mail services to the US, citing tension over tariff-free trade cancellations.

It’s one more sign that international shipping may continue to face disruptions in the near future.

What can you do?

If you frequently order from abroad, now is a good time to plan ahead. Here are a few helpful tips:

  1. Mind the $800 limit – Keeping purchases below this threshold can help avoid delays or suspensions.
  2. Follow updates from DHL – DHL and other carriers often post announcements on their websites.
  3. Consider other delivery options – Some carriers may not be affected, depending on the shipping method or origin.
  4. Build in extra time – If you're ordering a gift or item for an event, give yourself a buffer.

As international shipping rules continue to shift, staying informed can help you avoid surprises at the checkout—or the mailbox.
