Did you miss your high school prom? This event is giving seniors a second chance to dance

Maybe you were too shy. Maybe other priorities came first. Or maybe you never thought you’d get another shot.

But one community is proving it’s never too late to dress up, turn up the music, and hit the dance floor.

Across town, a beloved tradition is bringing back the magic of prom night—this time, with a little more wisdom and a lot more soul.

Because for these seniors, age is just a number—and so is the beat.

A prom just for seniors

The City of Hattiesburg, along with the Marketing Professionals for Senior Living, rolled out the red carpet for its annual Senior Citizen Prom on Wednesday.

Held at the Jackie Dole Sherrill Community Center, the event was an afternoon of music, food, and community bonding.

Local artist Charles Carter performed classic disco and R&B hits, filling the room with familiar tunes that got toes tapping and hips swaying.

Hattiesburg firefighters and police officers weren’t just there for safety—they helped serve food and joined in on the fun, dancing with the seniors and adding to the joy.

Community, connection, and celebration

“I feel like this gives the senior citizens a chance to go out and be with the rest of the community and not be shut in by themselves,” said attendee Selah Weary.

The event drew dozens of seniors from Hattiesburg and nearby areas, turning an ordinary day into something truly memorable.

“Today is a day that all seniors from around Hattiesburg and surrounding areas, we come together to dance and party and have a great time,” said Amatullah Shabazz.

For many, the prom is more than just an event—it’s a reminder of the joy that comes from connection, movement, and celebration.

Dancing through the decades

Whether it was a slow sway to the classics or a full-blown boogie, seniors were smiling, laughing, and reliving memories from years past.

These kinds of events are a powerful way to promote mental and emotional well-being, especially for older adults who may feel isolated.

With community support and participation from local first responders, the prom also reinforced the value of intergenerational engagement and respect.

And perhaps most importantly—it was just plain fun.
