Do You Remember This Gooey Pastime?
It came in a little tube, smelled a bit like the art room, and let you blow up wild, wobbly bubbles in swirling colors. They weren’t quite balloons and they didn’t last long, but the joy was watching those shimmering shapes grow bigger and bigger with each puff through the straw. Do you remember this gooey pastime from childhood?
That’s right—this is Super Elastic Bubble Plastic, a Wham-O hit from the late 1960s and 1970s. Kids would squeeze out the plastic goo, roll it on the end of a straw, and blow giant, rainbow-colored bubbles that looked like nothing else. They were fragile, sometimes sticky, and definitely had a strong smell—but they lit up childhood afternoons with wonder. Did you ever try making one of these bubbles yourself, or watch a sibling or child do it?
