The seasons are shifting, and so are the signs of COVID-19. For those over 60, staying ahead of the latest health updates is more important than ever.

The virus isn’t done evolving—are you ready for what’s next?

According to Dr. Brian Blank, MD, a family medicine physician and founder of Ember Modern Medicine, the two most common COVID-19 symptoms he's encountering are a head cold and sore throat, often accompanied by a runny nose.

These symptoms are indicative of an upper respiratory viral infection, which targets the upper airways, leading to irritation and the uncomfortable sore throat many experience.

The reason behind the runny nose is the inflammation of the nasal lining, which ramps up mucus production as a response to the infection.

Since COVID-19 often enters the body through the nasal passages, it's no surprise that this area becomes inflamed upon contracting the virus.

As for the head cold symptoms, which can include headaches and fever, one theory suggests that COVID-19 may activate the trigeminal nerve, responsible for transmitting sensations from the face to the brain.

Fevers are the body's natural defense mechanism, raising internal temperatures to create an inhospitable environment for viruses and bacteria.

Dr. Blank advises that if you're experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms, it's wise to take a test, especially if they persist for more than a couple of days.

Testing becomes even more important if you plan to be around vulnerable individuals, such as the elderly, pregnant women, or those who are immunocompromised.

If you test positive, the decision to seek medical attention or self-treat at home depends on your overall health status.

Over-the-counter flu medications may offer some relief, but those with pre-existing conditions should consult their doctor.

Medications like Paxlovid may be recommended based on individual health needs and COVID-19 risk factors.

While official quarantine rules have relaxed, Dr. Blank suggests staying away from others until you're fever-free without medication and particularly during the initial days when you're most contagious.

Symptoms can linger for up to two weeks, so it's prudent to minimize contact with others during this period, especially if you have a fever.

Prevention remains the best strategy, and Dr. Blank recommends annual COVID-19 vaccinations, similar to the flu shot.

While the vaccine doesn't guarantee immunity, it can significantly reduce the severity of symptoms should you contract the virus.
