Dollar General confirms new hours across 20,000 stores nationwide for Thanksgiving Day

Some shoppers may find themselves caught off guard later this month when their go-to store suddenly isn’t open when they expect it to be.

With a busy holiday season fast approaching, even a small change in retail hours can throw off last-minute plans and festive errands.

The shift coming soon will impact every store under one of the country’s largest discount chains, affecting millions of customers nationwide. Those who rely on convenience and accessibility will want to take note before the big day arrives.

Dollar General has confirmed that all 20,000 of its stores will operate on adjusted hours this Thanksgiving, November 27.

Store representatives told The US Sun that the exact hours could differ by location, urging shoppers to double-check before heading out.

The retailer remains one of the few that stay open for last-minute holiday needs while larger competitors like Costco, Trader Joe’s, and Aldi shut down entirely.

Those unaware of the shortened schedule could arrive to find doors already locked, creating added stress on an already hectic day.

While Dollar General’s Thanksgiving availability offers some relief to last-minute shoppers, its open doors are part of a larger comeback effort following a string of closures.

Earlier this year, the company confirmed that 96 locations were shuttered, but plans to open 575 new ones by year’s end remain on track.

CEO Todd Vasos said the decision to review and optimize stores “better positions us to serve our customers and communities.”

Dollar General’s continued growth underscores its dominance in the discount market, even amid rising inflation and shifts toward online shopping.

Shoppers should also note that Dollar General will be open on Veterans Day, November 11, while remaining closed only on Christmas Day.

Competitors such as Dollar Tree and Family Dollar are also expected to stay open with reduced hours during the Thanksgiving holiday.

Grocery chains, including Kroger, Ralphs, and Albertsons, will similarly operate on limited schedules, offering Americans multiple options for last-minute ingredients or essentials.

With Black Friday beginning immediately afterward, store staff and customers alike are bracing for one of the busiest weekends of the year.

Vasos emphasized that maintaining affordability and reliability is key for customers heading into the holidays.

“While the number of closings represents less than one percent of our overall store base, we believe this decision better positions us to serve our customers,” he said.

Dollar General also continues to mitigate the effects of tariffs and inflation, keeping prices around three to four percent lower than those at mass retailers.

With adjusted hours ahead, the company is reminding shoppers to plan their trips carefully to avoid unnecessary inconvenience.
