Don’t miss it: April SSI check arrives as expected, but watch the calendar ahead

Navigating the world of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) can sometimes feel like plotting a course through a labyrinth of dates and rules.

For the 7.4 million Americans who rely on these vital payments, understanding the schedule is crucial for budgeting and planning.

As we turn the page on the calendar, it's important for SSI recipients to note that while April's check will arrive right on time, the coming months will bring a few twists and turns.

Let's start with some good news: your April SSI check will be delivered without a hitch.

Since April 1st falls on a Tuesday, there's no deviation from the norm. But as we look ahead, it's essential to mark your calendars for the changes that May and the subsequent months will bring.

SSI checks typically land on the first of each month, but if that day is a weekend or federal holiday, the payment schedule shifts. This is where it gets interesting.

In May, you'll receive not one, but two checks: one for May and an early payment for June, since June 1st falls on a weekend.

However, this means that there will be no SSI payment issued in the calendar month of June, just as there was none in March.

The pattern repeats itself later in the year. In August, you'll receive two checks again—one for August and an early one for September—due to the first of September being a weekend.

Consequently, September will see no SSI payment. October follows suit, with two checks arriving, but leaving November without a direct deposit or check in the mail for SSI.

For those who also receive traditional Social Security payments, remember that these are issued on Wednesdays throughout the month, based on your birthdate.

And if you've been receiving Social Security before May 1997, you're paid on the 3rd of the month, with your SSI benefit coming on the 1st.

To help you plan ahead, here's a rundown of the SSI payment dates for the rest of 2025:

Supplemental Security Income is a federal program designed to help those aged 65 or older, as well as individuals who are blind or have a qualifying disability, and who have limited income or resources. It's a lifeline for many, including children with disabilities.

To qualify, adults generally must not earn more than $2,019 from work each month.

If you or someone you care about might be eligible for SSI, you can start the application process online, visit your local Social Security office, or call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) during business hours.

For those considering applying for Social Security or SSI soon, it's wise to set up an online account promptly.
