Don’t miss this settlement: Americans could get up to $160 with just a code

Some California shoppers who bought a mattress online in the past few years could now be entitled to cash as part of a deceptive pricing settlement.

Mattress Firm has agreed to pay $5.48 million over allegations that it used misleading “original prices” to advertise fake discounts.

If you purchased up to four mattresses in a single online transaction from MattressFirm.com between August 1, 2020, and July 16, 2024, you may be eligible to receive up to $160. A claim code is required, and the deadline to file is August 5, 2025.

The lawsuit was brought by California resident Erica Hampton after she purchased a mattress for $545.99, which was advertised as 30% off its listed original price of $799.99.

Less than two weeks later, the same mattress appeared on Mattress Firm’s website for $489.99, with a new label showing it was 38% off a different original price.

Hampton discovered that the mattress had not actually been sold at the original “discounted-from” price during the 90 days before her purchase, which is required under California consumer law.

She alleged that Mattress Firm’s sale prices were misleading and designed to trick consumers into thinking they were getting a better deal than they actually were.

The lawsuit stated: “Anyone visiting the website who buys an item on ‘sale’ from a stricken former or regular price is being misled.”

It also added: The prices were “inflated prices posted to lure consumers into purchasing items.” Mattress Firm has denied any wrongdoing but agreed to settle to resolve the claims without further litigation.

Customers who qualify can receive either a cash payment or store credit depending on whether they file a claim.

To be eligible, a customer must have made a qualifying purchase through the Mattress Firm website while living in California within the designated date range.

The payout is $40 for one mattress, $80 for two, $120 for three, and a maximum of $160 for four mattresses purchased in a single transaction.

Those who do not submit a claim form will automatically receive a store credit rather than a cash payment. The deadline to submit your claim using your code is August 5, 2025.

Shoppers who did not receive their code are advised to check their email inbox and spam folder or to contact the settlement administrator directly.

The process does not require a receipt or proof of purchase beyond the unique claim code provided to eligible customers.

This system is designed to simplify distribution while ensuring only valid claims are approved. The settlement administrator can confirm eligibility and help issue a replacement code if necessary.

Although this case involved Mattress Firm, similar pricing tactics have been reported across the retail industry, including during large sale events like Amazon Prime Day.

One user stated: “The sale? Wasn't one. Was just the same price it was before Prime Day, but with the red icon with a percentage off cause they rose the list price to make them look like they were on sale.”

Some shoppers said they tracked dozens of items ahead of Prime Day and found that most discounts were deceptive, showing false markdowns from recently inflated prices.

“Stuff like that should be outright illegal,” another shopper added. In contrast, others claimed to have received real savings, with one user noting, “Today, yesterday’s prices were discounted anywhere from 25 to 50%!” The inconsistency underscores the importance of tracking prices and questioning marketing claims.

Price-tracking tools such as CamelCamelCamel, Honey, and others can reveal a product’s historical pricing and help determine if a discount is legitimate.

Knowing the legal standards in your state—for example, the 90-day rule for original pricing in California—can help you spot questionable pricing.

Always be cautious with big-ticket items, especially during promotional periods when pricing may fluctuate without transparency. Shoppers are encouraged to report misleading practices when spotted.
