Eggs under threat? Salmonella scare leads to major recall

If you've bought eggs recently, it's time to check your fridge. The growing concern over contamination is making many uneasy—are your eggs safe?

Handsome Brook Farms, a New York-based supplier, has issued a recall for approximately 10,800 retail units of organic, pasture-raised eggs.

These eggs, sold under the Kirkland Signature brand, are a staple in many households that prefer organic options.

The recall was announced through a news release on the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) website.

The specific cartons in question were distributed to 25 Costco stores across Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee, starting from November 22.

If you've purchased eggs from these locations recently, it's crucial to check for the Julian code 327 and a “use by” date of January 5, 2025.

The recall was initiated after Handsome Brook Farms discovered that eggs not intended for retail distribution were mistakenly packaged and sent to stores.

This error has the potential to expose consumers to salmonella, a bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, especially in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Salmonella can cause serious health issues, including fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In severe cases, the infection can enter the bloodstream and produce more dangerous ailments.

While no illnesses have been reported to date, the recall is a precautionary measure taken in cooperation with the FDA.

The company is also implementing additional supply chain controls and retraining to prevent such an incident from happening again.

If you find that you have purchased the recalled eggs, it's important to take immediate action. First and foremost, stop consuming the product.

You can return the affected eggs to your local Costco store for a full refund.

Alternatively, if you prefer not to return to the store, you can dispose of the eggs safely.
