Elaine Wynn, known to many as the “Queen of Las Vegas,” has passed away at the age of 82.

While her name may be closely tied to some of the world’s most luxurious resorts, her influence went far beyond hospitality.

She was a woman of vision and generosity—a business leader who helped shape modern Las Vegas, and a philanthropist whose efforts reached classrooms, galleries, and communities across the country.

Though details surrounding her passing have not yet been shared publicly, heartfelt tributes have poured in—especially from Las Vegas, where her presence is woven into the fabric of the city.

Let’s take a moment to remember the life and legacy of Elaine Wynn—a woman whose story was defined by resilience, elegance, and a deep commitment to making the world a little brighter for others.

From modest roots to the heart of Las Vegas

Born in 1941 as Elaine Farrell Pascal in New York City, she grew up in a middle-class Jewish household—far removed from the glittering city she would one day help redefine.

After earning a degree in political science from George Washington University, her life took a turn when she met Steve Wynn.

They married in 1963, and together, they began their first business venture: managing bingo parlors.

By 1967, they had relocated to Las Vegas—and that move marked the beginning of what would become an extraordinary transformation of the Strip.

A visionary in hospitality

Elaine and Steve co-founded Mirage Resorts in 1976, introducing an era of elegance and spectacle to Las Vegas.

From the Mirage’s erupting volcano to the Bellagio’s dancing fountains, they reimagined what a resort could be—places not just to stay, but to experience.

In 2000, they launched Wynn Resorts, with properties like Wynn Las Vegas and Encore setting new standards for service, design, and luxury.

Elaine’s fingerprints were everywhere—from the artwork on the walls to the way staff were treated behind the scenes.

Even after two divorces from Steve, she remained a driving force in the company, eventually becoming its largest individual shareholder.

Personal strength in public life

Elaine’s life wasn’t without challenges.

Her relationship with Steve Wynn—twice married, twice divorced—was often in the spotlight.

In 2018, when serious allegations were raised against him, she stepped up once again, reclaiming a leadership role at Wynn Resorts during a critical time.

She also endured personal tragedy with grace and strength.

In 1993, her daughter Kevyn was kidnapped and held for ransom.

Elaine’s calm and swift response led to her daughter’s safe return—and the eventual capture of the suspects.

More than business: A heart for service

What truly set Elaine Wynn apart was her devotion to giving back.

She was a tireless advocate for education, the arts, and children's welfare.

Whether serving on the Nevada State Board of Education or championing nonprofit organizations like Communities In Schools, her impact was far-reaching.

She also lent her voice and support to major cultural institutions, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

In Las Vegas, her contributions to the city’s artistic landscape helped elevate its cultural identity.

Mayor Shelley Berkley remembered her warmly, saying: “Her spirit, creativity, and caring nature will live on through her foundation, the many projects she supported, and the lives she touched.”

A legacy that lives on

Elaine leaves behind her daughters, Kevyn and Gillian, and seven grandchildren.

But her legacy is visible in so many ways—in the skyline of Las Vegas, in the opportunities she created, and in the lives she quietly lifted through her philanthropy.

Wynn Resorts honored her in a heartfelt statement: “Her many talents and special touches are indelibly imprinted on the company and still evident throughout our resorts.”

Elaine Wynn wasn’t just a hotelier—she was a pioneer.

She led with grace, stood her ground when it mattered most, and gave generously of both her time and wealth.
