Elon Musk’s next big move in aviation–What it means for the future of air travel

The skies represent the next frontier for innovation, with advancements in air travel communication at the forefront.

Elon Musk’s satellite company, Starlink, is in contention for a significant federal contract aimed at modernizing the nation’s air traffic communications system, a move that could reshape the industry.

This development could bring notable changes to air travel, with potential improvements in efficiency and reliability for passengers nationwide.

For decades, air traffic control has relied on ground-based systems to manage the complex facilitation of FAA’s text and voice communication.

However, this infrastructure is aging, and the need for a modern, reliable, and efficient system is more pressing than ever. SpaceX, under Musk, is aiming to use its multitude of satellites to replace this system.

The Verizon contract, which was awarded in 2023, was to innovate a part of the system to a more modern face which depends on fiber optic cables. Contracting records indicate that approximately $200 million has already been spent on Verizon’s 15-year initiative to modernize the FAA’s communications system.

A Verizon representative stated that the company has not been informed of any amendments or termination of the contract.

Meanwhile, reports from government employees and insiders suggest that Starlink equipment has already been installed in Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) facilities, hinting at a potential shift from the current $2 billion contract held by Verizon.

This move could signal a significant upgrade in the FAA's text and voice communication capabilities, transitioning from the traditional ground-based system to a cutting-edge satellite network.

Elon Musk's dual role as a senior White House advisor and a business mogul has raised eyebrows and questions about conflicts of interest.

With Musk's companies spanning various sectors—from space exploration with SpaceX to electric vehicles with Tesla—his influence on government contracts is under scrutiny.

It is unsure what role Musk might be playing in assisting SpaceX take over this area of business.

While the prospect of Starlink revolutionizing air traffic communications is exciting, it's not without its concerns.

Former FAA officials have expressed the need for thorough testing, review, and debate to fully understand the benefits and drawbacks of integrating Starlink into the nation's aviation system.

The safety of air travelers is paramount, and any new technology must be vetted to meet the highest standards.

On Monday, the FAA announced on X that it is testing a Starlink terminal at its facility in Atlantic City, along with two additional terminals at “non-safety critical sites” in Alaska. These terminals serve as ground-based receivers that link devices or computers to orbiting satellites.

L3 Harris, another FAA contractor, affirmed that it was responsible for acquiring and testing Starlink terminals for integrating into the FAA's telecommunications infrastructure network.

Another spokesperson stated that the company has been working alongside SpaceX on this project for months.

Some details about SpaceX employees working on the project remain unclear. However, records show that three SpaceX software developers were given “ethics waivers” during the Trump administration. These waivers allowed them to work on government matters that could benefit Elon Musk’s company.

Normally, government ethics rules require employees to avoid conflicts of interest.

If their work could financially benefit them or their company, they must step away from the project, sell any related investments, or cut ties with the company. However, waivers can be granted in certain cases by government officials.

The waivers were given to Ted Malaska, a senior director at SpaceX, along with software engineers Brady Glantz and Thomas Kiernan. It’s unclear if they are still with SpaceX or what exactly they did for the government.

On Thursday, Malaska posted on social media that he had been meeting with FAA officials about modernizing telecommunications.

Musk’s involvement with government contracts goes beyond the FAA. His associates now hold key roles at the General Services Administration (GSA), which manages government properties and contracts.

The GSA already has an agreement that allows agencies to launch payloads using SpaceX, potentially steering more business toward Musk’s company.

In addition, other government agencies oversee different aspects of Musk’s businesses. The Department of Transportation regulates SpaceX and Tesla, NASA and the Department of Defense are major SpaceX clients, and the FDA is currently reviewing Musk’s brain-implant company, Neuralink.
